Looking for a switch

8uhbbhu8
Go to solution Solved by brwainer,

Switches will have SFP ports into which you connect a fiber transceiver of whatever kind you like (some switches lock you into using transceivers from the same vendor). Switches never have the actual optics hardware builtin.

I'm not aware of any switches with more than 4 SFP ports that also have a large number of ethernet ports. Switches are either ethernet focused or fiber focused. There are switches that have 12 "combo" ports meaning you can connect an SFP or ethernet into each one, but they can't use all 24 connections at once. You could get a switch with 24 ethernet and 4 SFP ports, and then use 4 media converters to get your extra fiber. Or use all media converters and no SFP ports on the switch.

Edit: Another option is to get two switches of the same type that support stacking, and then you'd have 8 SFP ports in one logical switch.

Alright so sometime soon in the future I will be upgrading my network and I need a specific type of switch.

What I'm looking for is a switch with:

Link aggregation

Minimum 10 1 gb ethernet Ports

Minimum 8 lc fiber ports (or fiber ports w/ compatible adapters.

Going with lc fiber because you can get 4port fiber cards for relatively cheap on eBay.

Going to use the server for game backup, vms, nightly/weekly desktop/server backups, storage, and downloads

When I can afford it I'll be using 6+ 1tb hdds in raid 10 and adding more as I get the money.

Link aggregation

each process can only take use of one connection so will only increase band width and not speed

I have been looking around for single switch which has both at that amount but I can not find any.

You may have to do with a fiber switch, trunk-ed to a RJ45 switch with fiber trunk ports
