xeon x5450 or e5462?

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

They're equally good. Go with the 5450.

What is it that you're doing with your system (and/or what GPU do you currently have)?

I'm going to try and mod my 775 LGA board into a 771 and buy a xeon processor. Now i have two options: 1. xeon x5450 for 25€ or 2. xeon e5462 for 40€. The decision is hard for me to make because  i don't know what exactly is better: system bus or frequency. Here's a comparison of the two on Intel's official SITE. I'm upgrading from a c2q8300 and want overall better performance. Which is better?

Thank you in advance

why exactly do you want to go down to socket 771? I would think you would have better luck with socket 775?

Because an E5450 is better than a Q8300 and there's not very far to go on LGA775 from a Q8300.

I don't have any (good) options to upgrade on 775 board, but i think 771 can give me just a bit more to help me postpone necessary upgrade (for which i don't have the money).

I currently have R9 280x  and i mostly game, but i also program and render animations as well and here's where my gpu feels sluggish. I know I should upgrade my whole PC because of the GPU bottleneck, but i got it really cheap and i was a huge jump from 9800GT. Thanks for the help

You could always save the money up for a larger upgrade instead of spending it. Its your choice but  I would save up if I were you. Unless you need it right away.

What's the effect of lower frequency and higher FSB?

RAM will bet a better boost in performance from higher FSB, but you need fast RAM and the BIOS has to support it

the lower freq might result in slower performance - but that needs to be tested in a head-to-head comparison

is 200Mhz difference enough to matter? perhaps not

The upgrade isn't urgent but I think this is just that little bit to get me going for a tad longer. Plus i hear it's not really great to upgrade right before AMD releases "revolutionary" line of cpus.

Well my motherboard accepts only DDR2 RAM so you could say i don't have the fastest memory.

the AMD's ZEN lineup is not due for some time and frankly, it won't be on par with Intel's lineup at the time it arrives

Just make sure that your board supports the FSB you want to run. My board only supports up to 1333Mhz FSB so I can't go any higher then a X5470. Would love to get a X5490 but that's a 1600 Mhz FSB and not supported. Currently running a X5460 but hopefully upgrading to 2 X5470s in the future.

Just checked and it supports up to 1600 MHz FSB. Thanks for the info. Is x5460 a good cpu? Because the only thing different from x5450 is base clock.

I wouldn't worry too much about Zen. Best case scenario it performs similarly to Skylake at a similar price point, worse case scenario, it performs worse.

X5460 just has a higher BC. I need high clocks for what im going to be using my server for though. :P going to get a pair of 4 port 4gb fiber nics and maybe a fiber/gbethernet switch, multiple HDDs in raid 10 for super fast transfers!
