Getting code for a game?

Wondering if there would be a way to get the base code of a game. I dont want to make money off it, so I dont know what would happen if I did get the code of the game, just to make a private server for some friends to play on with me whenever they choose to. The server would run the game 24/7, and they can get on at anytime they want. I know a friend of mine that got the WOW code, and re-coded some of the game and made a private server for his friends to play. That is really what im trying to do.

If there is a way to do this without causing lawsuits or anything, would be nice. Good game. But i think a private server of free to play would be nicer. thats my two sense about it.

So your friend most likely did not get WoW's source code, but rather was running an emulated server such as MangOS.

To get the source code of a game would be highly unlikely - it would only likely happen if there was a leak from the developer's offices themselves.
