Low powered server

ZeusXI

Wondering if there would be a decent server build, lots of storage for movies for a home theater or plex (or something like that as well) , but then also maybe a server for small games like terraria, minecraft, and some other titles like that. Lowest power consumption would be great. Also inexpensive would be nice.

This would be my choice for a full build.

CPU: i3, very efficient little processor with plenty of horsepower for a plex server Personally I use an Ivy Bridge (32xx) i3 for my media server that I frankensteined out of an old lenovo thinkstation. You could easily upgrade to a E3 xeon if you want a bit more power for ~$100

MB: Cheap reliable motherboard that supports ECC memory. You can save $20 but for server applications id strongly recommend going for it as its not much more expensive

RAM: AWFUL. PCpartpicker doesnt have any ECC selection so this is a placeholder. Replace as appropriate.

Cache: Personally I run a intel 520 240gb as a boot (pointless in a server really) & cache drive. I notice an increase in write speeds to my raid array using it so imo its worth it using a cheap SSD cache

HDDs: Placeholder, modify for your needs, in my opinion stick to smaller sizes with multiple drives in a fail safe raid for extra reliability.

PSU: Anything reliable should do it. Drives use about 20w per drive, less for an SSD. I use a 650w OCZ PSU for my 4 drives & SSD that I frankensteined out of my old gaming rig

Case: Whatever suits you. Some people like running ITX servers, some like full E-ATX for upgradability. Again im using a mid tower Lenovo Thinkstation case :D

Edit: If you are going for CHEAP cheap you could consider using an used office computer, that is the path that I done personally with a scruffy Thinkstation & 4 used "like-new" seagate barracudas 2TB which where in storage prior to my use, oh and an OOOOLD server grade intel raid control card since the office PC only had 3 SATA ports. Rig cost me a total of £220 with a salvaged PSU & SSD I had lying around. It runs some plex hosts, a permanent TS3 & occasionally a minecraft server. Minecraft server is good for ~10-20 players before the CPU gets taxxed.

PC:

Monolith(Laptop): CPU: i7 5700HQ GPU: GTX 980M 8GB RAM: 2x8GB 1600MHz Storage: 2x128GB Samsung 850 EVO(Raid 0) + 1TB HGST 7200RPM Model: Gigabyte P35XV4 Mouse: Razer Orochi Headset: Turtle Beach Stealth 450

IoT:

Router: Netgear D7000 Nighthawk

NAS: Synology DS218j, 2x 4TB Seagate Ironwolf

Media Accelerator: Nvidia Shield via Plex

Phone: Sony Xperia X Compact

If you aren't going to go for ECC memory you'd want an FX 8 core CPU, low power stuff with a good amount of performance is going to be fairly expensive, and the 8320E will have enough processing power for what you want to do and more

and a proper server is never cheap man

also you're going to want to use freeNAS most likely, as it can run virtual machines from within it, you aren't going to want to make your NAS virtual

the E parts are more energy efficient, and you could get down the power usage further by undervolting the CPU, but for comparable performance from an i7 6700T which has a 35W TDP, you'd have to spend $325 and I don't know why it's not available in the major stores

Or again i7 4790S with a 65W TDP, $300

If you want to go used there's the i7 2600S at $200, but then finding a motherboard becomes an issue

Overall the FX 8 core is going to be your best bet, plus doing virtualization work is like the only thing AMD is still good for
