Hey boys.

So I've got this odd sound coming off my PSU. I tried to read up on it myself but I couldn't find any sound matching my issue.

I'm going to assume it's not that bad since I couldn't find a matching sound but it did make me a little bit paranoid

The sound is as following.

I apologise the low sound/quality, I don't have any good audio equipment to record it. It's almost as a small ticking sound running almost constantly with a few seconds break every now and then.

Odd. I would replace the psu to be safe if you have a warranty on the psu use that. If not just get a new one.

I have an Anet A8 as my project printer and a i3 MK3 for when I want things to work.

I extrude my own filament and haven't saved a penny yet.

My PC:

Thats a little bit of coil whine as far as I could hear.

Is the PSU under heavy load?

Not at all.

It's sitting idle at middle of the night.

Although the fan is upside down in my case (at the bottom), not sure if that has an effect.

I could try to get a better recording if it might help?

I also take Coil Whine is harmless?

I do need to ask you this: Is it the ratteling noise you hear so often?

If you do have a Machanical harddrive than that might be it.

All I heard was a fan spinning and a hard drive's IO arm (thing) writing/reading data.

I'll see if I can't get better audio later tonight. It's too early, too much noise for me to get good sound.

Hey, so I got a little better audio. It's difficult to single out with a fan running but.. The start has some faint noises (10 seconds) and by the end you can clearly hear some clicking noises (26~ seconds). These appear to be from the PSU.

I apologise the loud fan. Also thanks for helping :)

It's difficult to be 100% sure. But it's certainly that region.

Any chance you know of any software which I can use to slow down the fan speed of my PSU? I know the sound my GPU makes, it's been bothering me a little bit, a small whiny sound but I don't think the ticking comes from it. Although it wouldn't surprise me if it started acting up. I'll try to slow down the GPU speed / increase it to see if it does anything but ultimately I'd assume it's the PSU. I'll report back if the GPU test yields any result.

Edit:

As expected the GPU had no effect. Even when dead silent it still appeared.

Well that whiny sound actually is Coil Whine, probably.

There is no software to control your PSU Fan speed unless you've got a Corsair RM series which have Corsair Link to indeed control the cpu fan (Other companies do have the option aswell though I'm not familiar with  any other PSU that does have that feature).

Try unplugging the graphics card and use Onboard graphics if you have, if not than this won't be an option.

This eliminates the fact that it could be the GPU.

Sadly no, no onboard.

I've got a Corsair RM 850 Gold Certified. I don't know if that has this "link" option though.

Does the IO on the inside of the case look like this?

See the C-LINK (on top left or bottom right)?

There should be a cable for it shipped within the original package, connect it to the PSU and a USB 2.0 connector on the motherboard.

The cable should look like this:

Install the Corsair Link software from http://downloads.corsair.com/download?item=Files/Corsair-Link/Corsair-LINK-Installer-v4.2.2.26.zip

Internal USB 2.0 ports look like these

asus_m3nht_cmos.jpg

They most likely will be on the bottom of the motherboard, You cannot put them in the wrong way because of the one filled notch

Most motherboard manufactures will opt for black female connectors, they can be any color, only the lay-out would be the same.

Some of them will leave these female caps of the board for the price so there could be a USB connector without this cap on it, any USB 2.0 connector should work, not the wider one, that would be USB 3.0 and will most likely be used for the Front 3.0 USB IO if available

Thank you :)

So according to Corsair's website : http://www.corsair.com/en/rm-series-rm850-80-plus-gold-certified-power-supply

This "hub", I assume the wires. Are seperate. So I'd have to see if I can't purchase a cable.

In the meantime I stuck my head into the case to see if it was my HDD making it or the PSU. It is most definately the PSU.

Which makes sense because it's also attached to the back of the case so the sound doesn't get lower or higher if I open the case panel or not whereas the Fan definately gets louder.

So you just confirmed its the PSU in a nutshell xD

I'm sorry, I thought that came within the package.

Well, does the PSU still have warranty?

If so Corsair REALLY REALLY want to help you out, 1 of my front usb 3.0 ports broke and they just send me a entirely new front IO within 2 days.

They're fast if you have soom legit proof of warranty ofcourse.

https://corsair.secure.force.com/home/home.jsp

They're happy to serve you at any time for technical support and RMA's if required.

Hey, so you made me question myself (thanks! ;) ) So I took out each of the different parts and ran them individually to avoid any confusion.

You're right, it wasn't the PSU. The fans are just that close to the GPU I couldn't tell the difference.

Yes, GPU is the problem.

Considering how it's already an essentially dead card running on borrowed time it's not that big of a deal. I'll replace it with the upcoming Nvidia series.

Thanks a lot for the assistance though :)
