Hello! For 2 days I was reading stuff about external GPUs for my Lenovo y510p laptop. Because of the lack of space in my apartment and lack of money for another display I want to use my laptops display with the external gpu. I have heard that there is a loss in fps if I use the internal display but I could not find any information on the volume of FPS loss. With the current GT 750m SLI i'm able to play games but I want a GTX 960. Now if the FPS loss is significant I might not want to spend ~300 USD on this.

Get a 380.

You mean the r9 380, ok :). But the question is how much is the performance loss using the internal display.

Does your laptop support eGPUs? Most don't. Check before wasting money.

Also, check for the 755M ultra bay - you can add that for 755M SLI which will increase performance by about 50-60% average

Yes, many confirmed that they did this but not with internal display. I already have 2 GT 750m.

You could also look into a better gaming laptop. If you want eGPU, you have to spend around 200$ on the GPU, 60$ on the PSU and about 100-500$ on casing. It will cost as much as half a laptop or more. You can easily grab a Y700 and enjoy performance of a 750 Ti

I would do that if I could sell this shit but honestly nobody wants to buy this SLI garbage.

Depends on the price you set. For 1000$? Nobody would. For 500$? Some people would.

My current goal is to reach a stable 30+ fps in Witcher 3 with my prefered settings at 1080p. For 500$ the GTX 960m is not that much improvement if I could hook up my current laptop with a gtx 960 or the above mentioned r9 380 for less that would but fantastic. Also I can live without a fancy case.

Well, in low settigns my 860M (960M with 100MHz less core speed) can average 50fps fine. On medium I get around 40. No reason why a 960M shouldn't play the game at 1080p

I understand your point but still the 500$ and the less performance is not quiet as appealing as the do-it-yourself miracle way of external gpu :)

eGPU also needs firmware support btw, once again I ask, does the Y510P have that kind of support

As far as I know there is a version of the bios that allows the use of external gpu. Not official. Lenovo prevents us from using different ultrabay cards.

Wait, you will try to use the R9 380 or 960 as a Ultrabay card? That might involve a lot of modding and may or may not damage the slot

No. That's not really an option. While there are many solutions for mpcie slots, thunderbolt and express card,  the lenovo ultrabay is not standard thus nobody gives a damn about it.
