Okay, so I've never owned a mechanical keyboard, because they cost too much, but if I can find a DIY kit to make one, my parents will pay for it. I saw the Planck on massdrop, but I'm looking for a normal keyboard. Could anyone recommend a (preferably cheap) DIY kit for a cherry board, that is available in Canada? It should be relatively easy to build (soldering, then done), and can be any kind of keyboard (60%, poker, ten keyless, etc). Thanks!

Cheap kits are a little on the hard side to find depending on the form factor you are looking for. I think ortholiner has a kit keyboard called atomic that is I think a little smaller than a 60%.

I can link to some places to get parts tomorrow if you want to maybe just get parts rather than a kit.

If cost is a factor I can't endorse DIY. The price of plate and switches alone would exceed the cost of a decent keyboard on sale.

I got a G710 for $50 + tax = $55 which I had to wait for a great sale for. Beat that with a DIY build.

Also DIY has a propensity to creep the price ever upwards with 'extras' or custom variances.

As someone who has swindled my own parents into paying significantly more to build my own custom PCs than buying a prebuilt system that was sufficient to my needs... I would see right through this DIY charade as a cost saving alternative.
