Hello, I recently upgraded my computer's motherboard, cpu, heatsink and graphics card. However, after doing a boot test, the computer did not display anything on monitor.

I have an Intel Core i5 Processor (Clocked at 3.2GHz) (Socket LGA1150), ASUS Z97-P Motherboard (with Socket LGA1150), 8GB Kingston RAM (I don't know the exact name of it) and an MSI GeForce GTX 960 GPU.

I need an adapter to connect the graphics card to my monitor as it does not have VGA which is what my monitor has. It is a HDMI to VGA adapter.

Also to note, I have a Pulse 500W PSU (Absolute tosh I know)

When I turned the computer on, my fans turned on and the lights came on, but nothing would display on the screen. I'm not sure if I connected everything right as I am a first timer at building a computer. I won't be too upset if I have to rebuild my computer but I will be very upset if I have to send parts back as I have only 1 device to play games on (I'm using an iPad to write this), so please try and give me the most information you can before saying it's a dead part.

Thank You.

CPU: Intel Core i7 8700

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070

MOBO: ASUS Z370-F STRIX

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2133MHz

Do you have a TV with HDMI which you can connect to and check the graphics card it working?

No harm in going over all you connections and see if anything is loose.

Since you're upgrading components, first try to connect your graphics card to another display to see if that's the issue. If not, try and see if you can substitute older parts and attempt to see if you might have a dead part.

If neither of these processes work, go through every single cable connection within your rig with your motherboard manual right beside you. So check and make sure your graphics card is installed in the 'best' PCI-e slot on your motherboard (for one GPU, it's usually the top one but it can vary). Also check that your storage has both power to the PSU as well as connection to your chipset if you're using a SATA drive. Finally check that all of your cables 'click' into your PSU and are in a proper slot.

If your PC won't POST after any of these, I would suspect that your PSU is the cause of the problems. Hope this helps!

My old processor is AMD so it will not fit my current mobo now. Maybe the tiny 1 pin cables (eg. PowerLED+ (or something similar)) are in the wrong place, I used the manual for those but it's possible I did it wrong.

I'll try all of your solutions :)

If your fans and lights came on when you turned on your PC, chances are they are in the right spot but it couldn't hurt to check. You might have to play around with some of the connectors on the motherboard as well. For instance, I have an AIO heatsink on the Asus Z170 Sabertooth and when I plugged pump power into the 'water pump' connector, it didn't work and I ended up having to power my pump on the 'cpu fan' connector. If all of your connections are fine, it's either your GPU or PSU but my money is on the PSU

maybe try to connect your monitor to your motherboard. that way its using the igpu and leaving out the gpu.

btw NEVER cheap out on the psu. i know it wont bring you more performance but it can destroy every other part

There are a lot of these HDMI to VGA adapters, but they won't work. Period. Unless it's a bulky powered one, it won't work, because HDMI is analogue, and VGA is digital, I had this same freak out myself, but using an HDMI monitor, it worked fine, so, I guess, either buy an HDMI monitor, or go to newegg and search for a powered HDMI to VGA adapter with good ratings, and read the  description and comments.

I tried that, won't work. Also, when I say it won't display. It actually won't get a signal, like the light on my monitor is yellow. I can't get a new PSU yet but I think it should be fine for now while I just sort everything out.

My monitor is just VGA, so I can't just leave it out :(

If anyone would like pictures of my cables etc just ask and I'll use my iPad to take pictures
