I have just upgraded my GPU from a GTX 660 2GB to the AMD R9 380 4GB. I am still having low frame rates and frame drops in most games, such as GTA V (40-20fps), STAR Wars, The Division. I currently have an i3 6100.

I am thinking of getting this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-BX80662I56600K-Core-i5-6600K-LGA1151/dp/B010T6DCBS?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A1A2ITNOSG7IH1

or this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-I7-6700K-Processor-Cache-LGA1151/dp/B012M8LXQW/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1459765760&sr=1-3&keywords=i7+1151

Is there much difference for the price? I want to play games 60fps on high settings, such as the Division and GTA V.

I personally would get a 4790k as they are around the same price as the i5! My 4790k is an absolute beast I love it to death! A 4790k is gunna last u 4-5 years plus before any bottlenecks... i5's tend to get outruled a lot earlier... Plus Skylake in my opinion is not as good of a platform as Haswell (I know people will disagree but its MY opinion)

i5 is enough for gaming. i7 is for more professional use. you wont see much fps impact in games.

depending on the game he will games like mmo ( WOW or others ) benefit alot from the i7 performance

otherwise the game performance of the i5 is almost the same as the i7

Oh good point of he does not wanna swap his MB, i5 = gaming! i7 for CAD, Video Editing, Picture Editing and also a better choice if u stream or record your gameplay. I personally went for a i7 because I had the money and I wanted a chip that I would never have to change for 4 years and just swap out GPU's every year or two

if you games utilise more cores, an i7 will benefit you

if you game and stream your game with cpu encoding, the i7 will benefit you

if you use softwares that benefit from more threads, an i7 will benefit you

if you just game, the i5 and i7 wont be much of a difference (maybe a few fps?) in term of gaming performance

though DX12 is going to be utilised widely soon so you might wanna take it into consideration

also, do you have a z170 chipset motherboard?

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

every year or two oO"? why not invest a few bucks more and have the card for much longer?

1-2year and then spend like 300 bucks again and again instead of buying a 980ti for 600 directly :P or the new generation thats coming

instead of the 970 i'd get a r9 390

aviationjames pls post your complete rig, mobo etc

I didn't want a 980 as I am only gaming at 1080p!!! And I have had waaayyy to many issues with the red team over the years and my first green team card has been flawless and I love it!!!! (just my personal experience)! And at that time I did not have £550+ quid lying around! I have other parts of my life that needs funding so 300 every two years is better than 600 every 4 years, if you get what I am saying :)

is your sig wrong? or is it another rig? if you want to upgrade your rig the sig (I'm guess you will because it contains the GTX660), i have to disappoint you: you have no Intel i3 but an AMD FX6100. If you want to go to intel's side of things, you will at least need additionally a new mobo if you stay on the 4xxx i5s/i7s, or new ram cpu and mobo if you get the newest platform.
