Most of the extra stuff can be disabled within the Settings app.

Newsflash: All OSes do some kind of telemetry. Windows 10 is by no means the first OS to do it, and it won't be the last.

I just can't stand the new start menu. It's better than WIndows 8, but it's just too bare-bones compared to say, the Win7 version. You can't even choose your own shortcuts for it, unless they are stupid tiles. So, here's my solution for that:

Classic Shell it's free and wonderful. You can customize the start menu however you want, add custom shortcuts even batch commands directly to it, changes themes, etc.

Other than that, I just disabled all that privacy nonsense. There are couple gripes here and there - mainly that some old control panel menus are not accessible from the UI (throws you to the new watered down settings "app") and you have to use commands for them. But adding those as shortcuts on the previously mentioned software solved that for me too.

Oh and, I had to mess with Group Policy Editor to disable automatic updates. Now it just notifies me when they are available, but I download them whenever I want to. A step backwards that this used to be a regular option in the past, but yeah.. Also be ready to troubleshoot some updates that might fail to install.

These are my "issues" with Win10. Other than that they run just fine and I quite enjoy the technological improvements under the hood. Really excited for their upcoming addition of ~bash natively in the system too.

Disabling in the settings app wont work, source

And I qoute "Examples of data we may collect include your name, email address, preferences and interests; location, browsing, search and file history; phone call and SMS data; device configuration and sensor data; voice, text and writing input; and application usage.", esentially a keylogger. source.

I run linux, as you can see in this screenshot it does NOT send anything (besids DHCP and local network stuff.), I will let a wireshark run when I go on break to prove that it doesn't send anything.

So not all OSes send data only Windows/Mac OSX.

CPU: Intel i5-3470

GPU: MSI GTX 780

OS: GNU/Linux.

It is pretty much a keylogger, which is spyware, but not inherently malware. Perhaps it's more correct of me to say that most major OSes practice telemetry, but I imagine that even some Linux distros perform telemetry, which includes diagnostic information, like Ubuntu. So while Linux might not inherently use telemetry, some distros might.

Telemetry data collecting is not spying. Please get your facts right people.

All these tools and things that is being asked to do to "stop the spying" in those videos, are lies. They are false illusion.

They do nothing more than what they did previously. Changing the Host file, also does absolutely nothing. Why? Because Windows doesn't use it. The host file isn't some sort of file that anything that access the web must use. No. It is up to the developer to choose to support it or not. For security purposes, Windows telemetry data collecting directly connects to Microsoft servers. So whatever you are doing, is a waste of time.

Telemetry data collecting is not new to Windows. Since Windows XP, it was there. Did you do anything in previous version of Windows? No? Then you see, no problem. So why it is an issue now?

Why people are freaking out? Mostly because the license agreement and privacy policy is now written in plain English, and doesn't require a team of 20 lawyers to understand. And also, people suck at reading plain English, and uses a lot of their imagination when understanding thing. Or it is anti-Microsoft team in action, and now it went viral, thanks to sites desperate for clicks, and people ready to believe anything they read on the internet.

What I find hilarious, is that most of these YouTube videos guys going "OMG privacy privacy privacy!!!!", end up using Chrome web browser, Android phone, and Google services, Facebook, and other large services, where you have 0 privacy, full tracking and that is NOT for telemetry, but rather actually get to know you. Chrome even tracks you when you go under incognito mode, and associate everything your google account, and tries to find your actual name. Can you say hypocrite to the max? Or just desperate for some views?
