All drives park their heads after they haven't been used for a while and eventually spin down. Whenever they are in a standby mode and there's a request from the system they would spin back up and thus produce those noises. As @Raisin06 suggested, if the drive passes WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic's quick and extended tests, it should be rendered safe to use.
Re-certified drives are not like the refurbished ones. They have been returned for one reason or another and have gone very extensive tests to verify that they are completely safe to use and haven't been repaired or touched at all. ![]()
