CPU very hot when benchmarking!

Go to solution Solved by Tech Lover,

as themctipers put it, dont use 95. i let it go long ago. its practically like, 'ok, take my cpu to the limits of temperature where it gets hot enough to fry it' -_-

AIDA64 is much better and controlled software IMO. u can benchmark same things, and even more, with more control and more reliability.

also, just a side note, check for hardware issues as well.

if i were you, i would first remove the rig out of casing, make it open, test it and then i would test again after assembling it inside the case. that way its much easier to may be remove and reconnect certain parts, if i find any problem.

also check for your cooler. check for fans connected, may be increase radiator speed a little. your room temperature effects SO much on your rig's temperature, trust me, im from a hot part of the world and i understand that people in colder areas get lower temps and vice versa.

Hello forum :)

got a bit of a problem with a hot cpu.

While idle and gaming i have no issues and temps are fine. But when i try to benchmark the cpu (with prime 95) the temps instantly shoot at 100 degrees (Celsius)

My cpu is the i7 6700K. I had it OC to 4.6 Ghz. I tried the benchmark at the standard 4 Ghz but the same problem occurs.

My cpu cooler is the Coolermaster seidon 120 ver2. I looked up some videos of this cooler and average temps should be around 50-60 degrees with prime 95.

My previous processor was the i5 4690K and also got very hot during prime 95 benchmarking.

Idle temps are around 30 degrees. I am using real temp to monitor my cpu.

I checked if the cooler is mounted right and i don't think that's the problem.

The motherboard I use is the Asus Z170 pro gaming

16 GB of DDR4 RAM

and im using the 980Ti

The new versions of P95 stress your cpu using AVX instructions, which causes every CPU after sandy bridge to jump up in voltage and temprature. This instruction set is not commonly used and it should be fine if you didn't use a new version of P95 to stress test. Try AIDA64.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Ok so i downloaded Aida 64 en did the cpu benchmarksat 4 Ghz. The max temps of my cpu were 94, 100, 87 and 90 degrees. It was very short though (not as critical as with prime 95)

I feel that those temps are a bit high for a watercooled cpu.

Should i use an older version of prime 95 to do long benchmarks or just use prime 95 not at all?

Only use Blend when running Prime95, OP. Small/Large FFT's cause Intel chips to hit 100c easily. But Blend is fine.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

Ok, thx for the tip and info :)

I also put the radiator of my cpu in push/pull and temps seem better now. occasionally it hits 90 degrees while gaming.

Well a benchmark ues 100% utlilization which is COMPLETELY unrealistic

Gaming at most will use 60% and that is an openworld game completely full of characters

Don't be alarmed at that and if it ever affects your gaming and idle temps check your cooler and thermal paste maybe upgrade it or reapply your thermal paste REMEMBER apply about a rice sized chunk in the center of your CPU less is more but too less is a BIG issue and too much will droop onto your motherboard

Yeah, I think the cooler is starting to struggle trying to keep up with the overclock. That's a little too high for my taste (I usually put my limits at the low 80s). You better watch out for thermal throttling though at those kind of temps.

here's my rule 60 Celsius you can make it faster 70 Celsius be cautious at 80 Celsius HOLD YOUR HORSES and if it 90 Celsius Crank back your basically frying it remember 100 Celsius is boiling water DO YOU WANT YOUR CPU TO BE SO HOT IT CAN BOIL WATER i didn't think so

The benchmarks are going fine now. but i was playing witcher 3 and the 2nd core maxed at 96 degrees (thermal status said LOG)

I might try looking for a different cooler (240 radiator) cause im not that comfortable with those temps.

That's still really high. I would usually shut down the PC or stop the load test if it got to above 85C...then reduce the overclock. I prefer reasonable CPU lifespan over an additional few 100MHz or so).

Yeeeaaahhh your probably going to want to do that try this, I have this in my system it 240mm and is great keeps my system nice and cool but my case is a little crowded with it, I never go above 85 Celsius and that's in 100% utlization in AIDA 64

Seems like a descent cooler :).

I'm gonna leave my cpu at clockspeed for the moment until i can try a new cooler.

Thx for the tips!

hmm lets see when i play rust it is around the 80 - 90% utilization rate

jesus you need to upgrade your ram and cpu because those being maxed out my 4790k and 16gb barely reach 60% utilization

well recently remember how i said my pc was unstable? it decided to stop working so i worked on it for a day and i went from 10GB to 8GB really couldn't get all them ram sticks working together

yeah you gotta get 'em in packs like 2 4gb for 8gb 2 8gb for 16gb and etc.
