Greetings people,

My Laptop Dell Inspiron N4050 has decided to stop booting into windows. When the power button is pressed, the booting process continues as usual and reaches the point where it plays the windows tune. And just before the moment where you have to enter the password to log in, the screen shows loading. The loading is taking forever and I left it overnight, yet the loading continues. I took it to a local computer store where they said, its either a hard drive failure or a windows corruption. I came back home and scanned the hard drive with the Dell ePSA pre-boot software. I also scanned for the OS Boot Path. Both of them appear too be fine.

All the drivers are working for the mouse, keyboard and a secondary screen is also connected successfully.

The PC has Windows 10 running.

I want to know that how can I re-install windows 10? I don't have a physical copy of it since I downloaded it last year when it was launched. Given that if I HAVE to.

Also, is there any way of accessing a folder inside the hard drive? I have a couple game-saves I haven't backed up.

Okay, to reinstall windows, you can do a "refresh" (I think that's what it's called) where windows reinstalls itself. It uninstalls all of your 3rd party software, but it reinstalls your OS and keeps all your files. It also keeps an HTML file of all the things that were uninstalled so you can keep track. For reading information off a hard drive, I like to whip out my handy USB to SATA adapter. One of the best tools I have. Through the power of USB, it essentially converts any SATA drive to an external hard drive.

there are a lot of software, i would recommend getting something like hirens boot cd, there is a bunch of software for you to use to copy files. you could also try to get a copy of win 10 and try to repair your computer as an option.

if i post a link to amazon try to use the LTT affiliate code to help the channel http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&tag=linustechtips-20

What does a boot CD do? I mean, is it like a basic OS where I can copy my files? And, do you mean I should purchase a new copy of windows 10?

To refresh, you have to boot into a windows install media. So make a bootable windows 10 flash drive (google it) then boot to that. As for getting the drive out of your laptop, it depends. Some laptops you have to take off the back, others conceal the drive under a separate panel.

Yes, I have researched a bit and now I am trying to get into the recovery mode of windows 10. I know how to make a bootable drive. As a matter of fact, I did make one earlier. Thank you so much. :)

hirens boot cd is something that has a bunch of freeware utilities to help do tasks on your pc when you can boot it or even diagnose some problems. check the site for more info, do a google search on it and you will a lot of references to it from reputable sources. i always have a copy of it whenever i troubleshoot someones pc. there are a few freeware software programs that will allow you to copy your files to a ext drive before you decide to refresh, repair or reinstall your os.

you shouldnt have to buy another copy , if im not mistaken if you dl win 10 again from microsoft you should be able to just repair your pc through advanced troubleshooting  vs reinstalling, try to see what options are available upon booting

I am currently mashing Shift+f8 to get into recovery mode. Then I will do a refresh which should not erase any personal files.

It doesn't I had to do it recently. It just uninstalls all of your 3rd party software which is a pain in the ass.

Umm...This is what happened when I finally got a bootable USB media. I am using USB as the boot priority. Any ideas?
