im planning on building a desktop to use as a home entertainment center for use with my 4k TV.   will mostly just be used for playing 4k video files at 60fps.

How much would a basic build cost that lets me do this?

Im looking to have some data redundancy so I wont lose everything if a drive dies,  would like a minimum of 6TB of storage

I'm in no way an expert for media centers, so this is highly speculative (maybe overkilled it quite a bit)

there is 750TIs with HDMI 2.0

EVGA got one.

get dual channel memory. it improves bandwidth which is needed when moving whatever file from disc into the player/onto GPU and costs only marginally more.

I'm confused as to what site this is. We recommend pcpartpicker.com as far as I remember.

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.

why are people recomending different colors of WD drives?  Im still slightly confused on what the colors reprisent

quality and purpose

Blue = For desktop machine. Slower all round drives. But not meant for 24/7 operation.

Red = meant for NAS systems. They are rated at 24/7 reliability for like personal media or backup servers.

Purple = For surveilance camera stuff. They are designed to be written to and deleted from 24/7

Black = For desktop machines. Faster all round drive, but it is not meant for 24/7 operation.

Green = For desktop machines. Slower drive with variable speed to save power. This "brand" has been discontinued in favor of "Blue"

Different colors represent different quality and and different functions they are specialized for.

Thank you!!

I guess I dont understand the difference between Red and Purple,  both are meant for 24/7 operations of writes and deletes,  does NAS drain the drives more?

yes and no.

Surveilance cameras write large amounts of data all the time, then overwrites the old data, then overwrites it again and again and again.

Whilst the NAS is meant to hold files and be read from. You dont do a lot of "writing" to a NAS, NAS meaning "Network Attached Storage". Which is essentially a HDD you can access from the internet.

However the NAS is "accesed" a lot, by reading the information it contains.

so red is better for reading and purple is better for being written to?

sort of... its a hard-drive, just using it wears it out no matter what you do.

SSDs dont really get worn by reading, but rather they get worn out by writing.

HDDs gets equally worn by reading and writing. So it doesnt really matter.

In the end, Blue, Black, Red, Purple or whatever, what those means is what Western Digital has validated them for. So these drives are either built, or picked based on their platter quality etc... for certain tasks.

For your purpose, Blue, Black or RED is the best.
