Hey guys

I'm about to upgrade my CPU and Ram for 3D Modeling and animation, I'm debating on either buying a Government Surplus Server for with dual x5690s or upgrading to Skylake, it seems that the x5690s will beat the 6700k by about 15k points on Geekbench 3 and the whole server costs less than CPU, Mobo, and Ram (By about $100-$200 CAD).

But since Intel has ditched the Tick-Tock system, and Kaby Lake will be on the LGA1151 Socket, has anyone heard of Intel releasing the next CPU after Kaby will be on the 1151 socket as well?

What are you guy's thoughts? Server or Skylake?

Whatever is better performing for less.

Thought this would be a sort of obvious answer :/

For your use case I would think that the server would be a stronger machine. Hard to say what will happen down the line as skylake is still very new and the new chips are quite a ways off yet. If I were you I would go with the server as long as the hardware checks out.

If I upgrade to Skylake, I get many more features. Such as M.2, DDR4 for more capacity(Even though max Ram capacity on the server will be like 512TB with ECC and USB 3.1) The question is that, will Cannon lake be on LGA1151 as well.

How much does the server cost? Would it be well worth your money to get it now and then get something to replace it 1 or 2 generations down the line?

The server will cost about 600-700 CAD, and I can't really upgrade the server as it is the highest end LGA1366 CPU there is. But I could just hook up more servers and make a render farm.

X5690s it is I guess. If I got the server I would be keeping my main rig anyways.

is it a 4u server or a 2u or 1u or 3u server box?

When I said upgrade I was referring to getting a new build oriented around whatever platform we land on in another 2 iterations of Intel CPUs :P

I forget, the Government surplus site is a auctioning site, I didn't get the chance to get my bid in so I didn't get it, but I think it was a 2U Box

Ah, who knows we might not even get a new architecture due to them ditching the Tick-Tock system.

if it was a 4u box you could put full sized GPUs in there and create a rackmount gaming box lol

That would be actually applicable in my situation, GPUs for GPU accelerated rendering.

I thought they were extending it, not ditching it;

I'm hopeful that with more time spent on 14nm will make for better performance in Cannon Lake. Personally, I would plan on waiting for Cannon Lake. After all, it's only a year and a half away.

You are right, but it technically isn't tick tock, because it means Tick being Process, and Tock being Architecture, but now its more like Tick, Tock, half tock.

Either way, this is one step towards better prioritizing, on Intel's part.
