Hey :)

I have just done some upgrades to my PC and am already thinking of upgrading soon. I'll include the things I am thinking of upgrading and what I'm thinking of upgrading them to, a PCPartPicker link for my rig, my use scenario and the things I don't want to upgrade because I am happy either them or I just upgraded them recently.

PC: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/PGYysY

USAGE:

  • i do regular editing of 1080p video both for gaming videos and digital media projects for school
  • I play mainly less demanding games at 1080p, with aspirations of 1440p, such as CS:GO, Guild Wars, Quake and DOOM II. I also have plans to play some slightly more demand ping games from time to time like Bioshock Infinite, Battlefield 4 and other AAA games that look appealing.
  • I like to leave a lot of things open and I am a total chrome tab whore. I often get close to the 16gb limit.
  • I will use this PC for computer science that may or may not end up being demanding.
  • I do a small amount of 3D modelling work etc.

WHAT I WANT TO UPGRADE

  • I think an upgrade to a i7 6700k would be good to speed up video work. Maybe a lower end Broadwell-E CPU when they come out or a discounted 5820k.
  • Grabbing an extra 16gb of ram seems like a good idea
  • I want to switch my dual 1080p displays to a single 32" QHD monitor. Probably a Korean one. I'm not sure if it will be worth it. I do tend to use the second monitor a lot when recording game play etc.
  • i think that I might do a custom loop with glass tubing and mod the side panel of my 400q with a tempered glass window.
  • I might switch my boot drive from the v300 240gb to a Samsung 950 m.2 drive
  • i might switch my Hitachi and Seagate drives to two 2tb WD Blacks in raid 1

WHAT I WANT TO KEEP

  • Case (happy with it and I just got it)
  • GPU (just upgraded. I'm gonna wait for Polaris and pascal)
  • Motherboard (fine for me right now unless I go for an enthusiast CPU)
  • fans (Noctua NFF12 PPC are the best of the best so yahhh)
  • cooler (until custom loop)

Any help appriciated :)

Should probably just jump to X99 with the 5820K, broadwell is only about 5% faster than haswell anyways. That way you have tons of CPU performance to spare.

Far as the displays go, shoot for a 32" 4k display, the crossover 32 ain't too bad

a PCI-e SSD isn't really going to be worth it

RAID 1 really isn't going to be worth it, just back up your data to an external drive on occasion and you'll be fine, it's highly unlikely that one of your drives would just die on it's own.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

  • Yeah. I don't plan to upgrade super soon so by time Broardwell E is announced Haswell E will have dropped in price.

  • I was looking at a matte 32" 1440p QNIX display. Thoughts?

  • I know. It's more to free up drive space an reduce cabling. I have a 400Q and it only has three 2.5" drive bays

  • I have problems backing up. I have slow internet so arcing up to a cloud is not an option. I don't like to use heaps of external drives as backup and I don't have enough money to buy or build a NAS. I also have had a drive fail while I was making a video and it also had a lot of archived footage on it so I'm kinda paranoid now.

  • Thinking of storage what do you think of the Home Cloud thing that Wendell is doing over on TekSyndicates Linux channel? Is that going to be worth it?

4k all day man

Otherwise, ya a NAS is going to be better than RAID 1 for back ups.
