I have just gotten into setting up my own server. I have port forwarded and made myself an admin. Now, I want to know what next steps I should take. What guides should I follow? What mods should I use? What ways should I protect my server landscape and my players? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Quote me if you want me to reply.

Mods: NONE!

Plugins: Worldedit and worldguard are ESSENTIAL. Also essentials (most things but protect!)

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I am currently using the standard minecraft server software from their website. Does bukkit use a different software as a base? I don't want to have to set everything up again. Or,  is it something that complements the software I already have?

Bukkit uses the minecraft base its just way more customizable.

Also, use spigot not bukkit

What is the server for? Do you want to host publicly or just for your friends?

If you're going to host publicly, I'd advice to use Bukkit/Spigot for the security features. Otherwise, it depends entirely on what kind of server you want to play on with your friends. I'd advice a whitelist though.

I plan to play with friends for the most part.  I tried to set up a whitelist,  but for some reason it refused to load. Is there a certain way it has to be formatted?
