Im upgrading my laptop CPU andI am curious if you think it can power the processor I want. I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 with an i3-2310m and I plan to upgrade to an i7-2630qm. Can my laptop handle the extra 10W it needs or do I need to step down to an i5?

I don't know about you but the CPU in my laptop is soldered in place. Also, RIP your battery if you upgrade the CPU.

I'd upgrade to no more than an i5 if it's even possible to remove the CPU in your system as you don't know if the MOSFETs and all that can handle the extra heat.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

If I am not wrong, your power adapter is 65W, so it should not be an issue with power, because on battery, no laptop will use its full potential. Heat is another issue, have you taken note whether your laptop can support the extra heat produced by the quad core processor? Is the heatsink beefy enough?

From what I hear that i7 is supported by my laptop, so I would assume it would. I plan to find a way of ramping up my fans

For what those things cost, why don't you get a business class Dell to retrofit it into?  They typically have metal cases, so there's more heatsinking of the heat such a processor would generate (hence it would run derated less of the time).  Plus the inevitable replacement batteries you'll need to buy will likely be cheaper.

IMHO, uprated CPU's in laptops are usually not a good upgrade unless you get a die shrink out of it that meaningfully shifts the watts for performance ratio.
