Hello there! I recently built a computer (the one in my profile) and now I would like to play games with friends. I'm not new to hosting my own server for Minecraft, Terraria, and ARK: Survival Evolved. With the building of my new computer, i'm looking for a "Small game server build" (Around 5 players at a time). I'm not trying to make a super computer, I just want something that can run these game servers so my gaming computer doesn't have to.  I'm thinking I want a Mini ITX Motherboard and case with at least 16 GB of RAM, and 1TB hard drive(possibly with an OS SSD). I don't have my heart set on anything else. I'd love some suggestions for all of the parts: Boards, PSU's, Cooling, etc... :)

Sounds good! I guess I'm mostly stumped with trying to pick a CPU and motherboard. I'm used to shopping for gaming processors so I'm fairly unfamiliar with this whole aspect of those two.

You've got a few options available. If you want to go entirely new hardware off the shelf, I'd recommend an AMD FX processor with 16GB RAM. If you're planning to run several servers simultaneously, double it to 32 GB just to be sure.

But if you're willing to go used, I'd actually recommend checking out refurbished systems. For example I recently picked up a dual-Xeon workstation with 8GB RAM and a 500 GB HDD for 250 USD plus shipping. And there's a decent variety of systems available. The system I just mentioned came from refurb.io. And Arrow Direct is another place that sells refurbished systems. They come with a Windows license as well. Most won't have a decent amount of RAM, so if you go that route, expect to at least need to buy a memory upgrade for it.

Wife's build: Amethyst - Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X570-P, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 12GB, Corsair Obsidian 750D, Corsair RM1000 (yellow label)

My build: Mira - Ryzen 7 3700X, 32GB EVGA DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X470-PRO, EVGA RTX 3070 XC3, beQuiet Dark Base 900, EVGA 1000 G6

A NUC / Brix would make a suitable small game server.
