So I might be getting my hands on an old motherboard, some ddr2, and a core 2 duo, along with some power supply. I'm gonna scrounge up some storage somewhere, but i will have no case and don't wanna buy one. I've seen some pretty good ghetto case ideas, which should I do? Cardboard? Wood? Something else?

Well, unless you are a carpenter, maybe be crafty and make a test bench of cardboard!

or just make a 3layer stack for each side.

One of the purposes of a case is to contain and prevent the spread of fire if component failure causes sparks to fly.

I don't see how wood or cardboard are at all compatible with such.

This would be a big fire if it was constructed in a cardboard or wood case:

Wood, especially planks take more than some sparks to catch fire despite what the movies say. But either way, a cheap plastic or even metal lining would solve that.

Try explaining that to an insurance adjuster.  I'm all for creativity and such, but this is one area that people really shouldn't fool around with.

By that logic no one should ever have paper, cardboard, or wood near electronics, let alone those designed for heat such as hair driers. At some point the likely hood of an occurrence becomes small enough to take a chance. I invite you to take a fire stick or stun gun and set a 2x4 on fire with no kindling, and tell me if you think its a high risk for a wooden pc case.  But again, a simple plastic layer would exponentially increase the safety in that regard.

I have never seen anyone build a case only made out of duck tape. You should do that! That's really ghetto.

yes, but i have no money, and definitely have not enough duct tape

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

I love this, but paint costs money. In case the extent of my brokeness was unclear, I'm a freshman in high school, no job yet, $19 to my name.

Dude, you have to get yourself a job. Being constantly broke is no way to go about,

any small mishap will leave you stranded and youre going to pay more money for credit etc.

because you just need those extra couple hundred bucks to fix your car/washing machine, pay your rent/traffic ticket etc. Personally id say save up so you can support yourself for 1-2 years without cash influx....just my 2 cents.

Anyway you could get scrap wood and a frew nails for free plus a set of acrylic paint from a dollar store or so.
