Hello I was thinking  about upgrading my computer, I have change some parts in it before so the computer I have now is a unknown motherboard, i7-3770 processor, 8 gigabyte of DDR3 memory, GTX 960 Strix  4 Gb, 500watt PCU 80+ efficiency, 1 terabyte of HDD memory and the case is good enough to now worry about that. I have a budget of 400-420 dollars and I'm aiming to change the motherboard, processor to a better one.

I'm grateful for all your answers .

If your gaming upgrade the 960. The 960 is horrible. R9 390 perhaps? The i7 ivy bridge CPUs are still good.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Throw in an SSD if you have a disc with windows lying around. I recommend Kingston's HyperX Savage drives, thanks to their great performance at decent prices. Oh, and another thing, is your PSU rated at just 80+, or 80+ Bronze?

My friend didn't realize until today that his graphics card was worth $1000

Seriously, SSDs make a world of difference in boot times, and are a worthy investment. You can get a 240 GB one for less than a quarter of your budget, and just put windows and the games and programs you use most often on it, and everything else gets sent to the HDD. You can get a more reliable motherboard and an SSD in your budget. CPU should be just fine, just make sure the mobo is Z77 or if you're not going to use SLI/Crossfire, H77 if your going to continue to use your current CPU. Otherwise, I'd recommend bumping up to the Z97 archetecture, grabbing an Intel i5 4960K if you're only gaming. I should note that the only difference between i7s and i5s is that i7s have hyperthreading (take the # of cores and add the same number of logical cores to it) which games show little to no benefit of having. If you're editing, rendering, or doing anything that is more CPU bound, then an i7 4790K will run you an extra $100, which in that case, get an SSD later.

If you're on any type of a budget I would avoid upgrading the CPU..  An i7 3770 is still good.  A gtx960 is not "horrible".. its no titan x or anything.. but far from "horrible".

If I had to upgrade the pc based on what you've said so far, and that's if you're sure you need a new motherboard... I would look for another 1155 motherboard, keep the i7, get a SSD, and if there's money left over another 8gb ram.

my work in progress

i5 6600k  //  16gb g.skill ddr4 3000  //  evga gtx 980

Z77 uses that socket, silly. Also, I updated my post.
