Upgrade CPU or GPU

I currently have a i3 4170 and a GTX 950. I opened up a CPU upgrade thread about an hour ago and someone said i would be fine with an i3 4170 paired with a GTX 970. Also give so tips on last gen (700 series and 200 series) GPU's i could get used because I don't know much about last gen. Total budget for upgrade is around $400 CAD ($300 USD) RIP Canadian Dollar.

if you're gonna get last gen gpu, i suggest you dont get nvidia's

just because they're treating their last gen products like crap nowadays ._.

 

if you just have $400 to upgrade, i suggest you dont get that cpu then

since if you get that cpu, you pretty much cant get a gpu better than the 950 you already have with the leftover $105, used or new

FX 6300 isn't an upgrade from an i3 4170...

Mhh, a i3 is paired quite nicely with an 950 actually, so you could upgrade any of those first.

Assuming you sell that 950 and i3 youd have 200-300$ cad more, so you could get a used r9 290 (with an aftermarked cooler, the stock one sucks) or a 970 for a bit more and that cpu.

 

Edit: Just checked your psu, with a 400w unit a r9 290 might be a bit close, so better go with a 970 or something like that. A 950 goes for around 170-180, so it should net you around 150, the i3 is around 100.

How much could i sel a GTX 950 for? $150 CAD?
