Painting my GPU

GeorgeKellow

I'm going to paint the plastic shroud (not the fans)  a red colour to match my of my system

What type of paint should I use? (UK so it would be £)

Cheaper the better

General tips would be nice :D (do's and don'ts etc etc)

Something that doesnt flake over time, something with high heat resistance, and

I used PlastiDip because it is heat resistant and I can peel the paint off if I need to.
Then you just have to look out for the usual stuff:

  • Don't loose any screws when taking your card apart
  • Don't paint the PCB
  • Make sure you're grounded when handling the PCB

You can find my thread about painting my two GTX 980s in my signature. Maybe it helps you.
(It's kinda messed up tho since the forum update)

I suggest you watch the "Painting your GPU" video from Linustechtips if you haven't already as for color it's your GPU you can choose what color you want to color it and what price range.

As for "Do and don't" I don't really know much as I never painted my GPU thus, I have no experience of it so I don't want to give out false information.

In general regular spray paint will work and high heat paint is not necessary as the GPU and shroud itself doesn't get hot enough to cause any issues. For the best color selection and vibrancy automotive paint would be the best choice.

For or more detailed info on this I have a guide here under GPU Painting that goes over all of this:

Heat resistance is not really an issue whenever you are painting a plastic component.

Even when painting things that do get warm it is more a matter of the paint being able to tolerate the expansion and contraction than anything else.

Is Plasti dip the best for pc parts then?

Could you link me a nice bright red colour? Not too expensive!

Best depends on your criteria.  The 'best' thing about plasti-dip is, if you want to change or remove it, it simply peels off.

One of it's main downsides is the limited range of colors available.

Personally I like Duplicolor paints, but am not sure if they are available in your area.

As mentioned it depends, plasti-dip on the plastic shroud isn't a problem as it's just a shroud and lets you easily remove it after if you want, but if you were trying to paint fans or other things then plasti-dip will not work since it builds a thick coating compared to paint.

I had the same idea a month ago with my 970!... try to disassemble all as you can to take apart only the parts to paint, paper tape is a good thing to use if you need to make strips. About the paint, well, is a 960, nice temps always, so i think a special and expensive paint is not necessary... but if you can get it, much better!
Retire the decorative decals with a cutter, take care to not bend it so much, decals are build in a metallic-plastic material and its a problem if you bend until make a mark in this. best thing to do is heat the decal before trying to remove it.

Play with the factors on your graphics card to get a good design, and show us the result for new ideas on the future!

I used a generic spray paint without heat resistance.... and it works perfectly on mi rig, geting up to aprox 60º - 70º degrees on full load with videogames... obvioussly this decorative trim for the cooler don't reaches this temps.... i think, lol :-)

I would use PlastiDip since it's not conductive, even when it's a liquid.

My rig: Intel Core i7-8700K OC 4.8 | NZXT Kraken X62 | ASUS Z370-F | 16 GB Trident Z RGB 3000 (2x8) | EVGA 1070 SC | EVGA SuperNova NEX650G1 | NZXT H700 | Samsung 250GB 850-EVO | 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs

Well, sinceriously, i don't have so much idea about what kind of paint is better for this use that we need.... in my case, i went to the paint shop on my city, and explain to the dependent my case, "i'm looking for a Metal and Plastic paint, with a nice scratching resistance (to pull out and in the components 1 time each month to clean) and heat resistance". He select this "synthetic polish" and says "this is all you need"..

.. However, is possibly to found in the market a type of Anti-heat Paint, used in car engines, stoves, barbecues, radiators, etc... Maybe the problem is to get this on the colour that you need....
But in my case, this paint that i used, do not specify any form of heat resistance, is a Multi-surface paint, with scratch resistance and solvent based, that provide best results than acrylic paint.
If you are really scared for the effect of the heat on the components paint, you can try to use this 800º heat-resistance Varnish after the paint... i don't use this, but if you need an extreme resistance (Like AMD and overclocking temps will need hahaha.. its a joke) you can try this and tell us your experience soon. :-)

I've never shopped at this store, it is an example of the painting I say. you choose the site that is trusted you.

That's basically their version of plasti-dip or peelable rubber coat which will work, check the guide I wrote under plasti-dip for more details as there are certain limitations to it, but for a shroud it would be a good place to use it.
