What hard drive should I get for my NAS?

A WD Red

I agree, WD Red drives are designed to be in a NAS environment, and are very reliable too :)

Hello everyone,

So, I've decided to get some sort of NAS in my house. For this I'll of course need a hard drive. A few things about the NAS and the use it will be getting:

- It'll be built in an ±8 year old random computer (just normal SATA data and SATA power), and reside in the livingroom, so silence is an important factor. The hard drive cage doesn't have rubber stuff, as far as I know, and isn't very well ventilated (but it doesn't get super hot here in The Netherlands).

- This drive needs to be 2 TB. It will never go in raid, because that's not needed, as most files on it are backups anyways. It'll probably be alone in the case for now, as 2 TB is more than enough for now. The NAS will probably always be turned on, and make backups of turned on computers every hour (at different times then, of course).

- Budget: as long as it isn't overpriced, everything should be fine. Longevity would certainly be a great thing. I don't really care about warranties, as I'm not hoping to have to use them.

If you need more information, please ask. :)

I hope you can help me, thanks! :)

Thanks! I also asked the people in the Dutch Talk on this forum, and they gave the same answer, so I ordered a WD Red, which will arrive tomorrow. :)

(I can't put two posts as the abswer, so I'll do the one with the most information)
