Need help with a build for Brother-in-Law (spreadsheets)

deguzi

I was wondering if anyone could help me plan out parts for a build needed by my brother-in-law.

He's a financing manager for the United Parcel Service and needs a PC at his home that can calculate large spreadsheets and formulas. (i assume that requires more ram than usual?)

He'll be multi-tasking between tabs and programs, probably watch movies here and there, and his gaming needs are pretty minimal (online poker).

His budget is $1000, and wants to split $700 for the tower, and $300 for 2 monitors, peripherals and speakers.

Im unsure if AMD can handle the spreadsheet tasks or if an i3 or i5 is needed. My experience is zero to none with large spreadsheets so im not sure what processing power is needed.

Any help is much appreciated.

I would go with a high end i5 or a mid-low end i7. I wouldn't feel right recommending AMD to anybody, given my past experiences.

A tad overkill, but since he uses it professionally the extra oomph certainly won't hurt. And the iGPU will be more than enough for online poker.

This is fine but you could get it back under 1000$ if you downgraded from a 380X to something like a PNY 750ti

Cores/Threads. The i7 has a superior architecture, so it should out perform that ancient fossil AMD FX

Why? AMD is fine. Just to clarify I prefer Intel, but xcel loves RAM and cores....

I have had a bunch of issues with AMD both their GPU and CPU's. They tend to heat up a lot more then I would like. I don't like to water cool my systems so I prefer to use aftermarket air coolers.

isnt 9590 a hot and power hungry cpu? energy efficiency is probably another important factor.

Might subtract the GPU and get an i7..

I somewhat agree. Plus my brother in law has no PC experience and would not like the thought of water cooling his PC. most likely, he'd like to stick with air cooling to put his mind at ease.
