‘The Last of Us’ writer looking to indie games for inspiration

A lot of people, including me, like the Last of us. It's a good game. But how the developers come up with the story?  Neil Druckmann,Writer and co-director of the zombie epic, said his inspirations is from other indie titles.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Druckmann predicted that more AAA titles will have more bold storylines in the games in the coming future. He also praised several indie games like Going Home and Papers Please, said he was “blown away” by how these indie games delivered their stories.

“With big AAA titles, it’s sometimes hard to make these gigantic shifts as far as what a game is or what kind of story it could tell. As more and more examples come to light, I think more people are pursuing better narratives. I think that change is going to happen much more rapidly going forward.”

I like this http://youtu.be/XRtxKlg_wI0?t=25m10s part where some of the people from rev3games are talking about indie and triple A. If you don't watch it they are basically saying that the separation between distinguishing yourself as a triple A or Indie title is going to go away and it's going to move back into is it a good game or a bad game. Indie at the moment seems to be a crutch that describes a game but really doesn't have anything to do with it at all.

CDProjektRed is an Indie studio yet we don't call them that, but anyone and everyone else seems to be running around yelling and screaming 'look at us we are indie our game is new and different because we are indie'.

http://youtu.be/XRtxKlg_wI0?t=23m There's a link for the whole question.

So basically my answer to this is it doesn't mean anything. Indie could mean any number of games. Did he look at the Witcher series? A platformer or a beat-em up? Indie doesn't mean anything (at least to me) because it doesn't describe the game at all it doesn't mean anything. Even the 2 examples of Papers Please and Going Home are nothing a like, I feel games should stop being labeled as indie because it doesn't mean anything and is just a crutch of 'hey you should check this game out, it's indie.'

I think the general consensus on "what is indie?" is simply games that are not funded by a publisher and/or also do something that no AAA game would risk.

That is how I imagine it anyway. I think the writer is talking about games that fall into the second category. Ones that do things no AAA publisher would let them risk money on.
