I use Avast and malewarebytes and they seem have done pretty well. Widows defender is obviously disabled so I'm not sure if it would have gotten what those two did.

Windows defender + malwarebytes + superantispyware should be enough if you're not stupid, this is what Luke AND Linus recommends. I would recomend looking into the Ghostery add-on aswell coupled with ad-block to make sure you get rid of most of the nasties out on the web (remember to disable them when watching Linus though!).

Personally I used Kaspersky, always worked like a charm though it's not really necessary anymore, the kids are making ransomware now, not viruses. The earlier combination has worked well for me and my parents computers for 5 years now, never had any issues at all.

I have the same combination you stated but except for superantispyware I have heard that it is spyware, is that true?

Absolutely not, it REMOVES spyware. Google it and you should see a lot of positive stuff about it. Both Linus and Luke has recommended it on the WAN show.

obviously that its not enough.  Even how many times guys tell u that defender where updated, its till haven't ever protected from real threats.. Personally I have seen tons of times when this Av failled protect pc and pc require full hard driver wipe.

no, it's not; but depends what you're protecting

I suggest you look into paid AVs like

  • Kaspersky
  • AVIRA
  • BitDefender

http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparatives-reviews/

Well its better than nothing. BitDefender, and avira  usually are in top  in most av reviews. However kaspersky, well it like to make fake alarms.  Every new installed software could be killed by mistake.. Also had times when kaspersky killed my os  after new updates... Plus its like to eat lot of pc compute power.. Which I would like to use for other stuffs..

So even free simply av would be enough if z123killer will not download unknown softwares, or visiting unknown web pages..

Why the heck keep super antispyware if u have MalwareByte am? Spyware, trojan, keyloger are in category as malware...  So there is no reason put couple softwares for same task..

Plus remember that some security softwares would start to kill each other which would lead to bigger downside rather than benefits..

I used avg free for years and no problem. Now have upgraded avg version and also no problem..

So even if  like use avast, bitDefender, kaspersky  your protection  would be fair enough.

Just for browsing add addblocks to avoid annoying adds with links to virus containing websites.

Plus current internet security as kaspersky have some portion of antimalware algorithm plus decent firewall.

IF u be carefull by yourself. U will have less chance to get infected..

Getting old is wonderful, when you consider the alternative.

I've been using KIS for most part of the last two years on my main and just the AV (for 1y) on my laptop with zero issues regarding

---

as for free AV .. they're junk - I've put a free AV on my dad's PC, I'd rather throw that thing out of the window instead of fixing it

you cannot know how the user behaves; if you have something to protect, never skimp; you can get 2-3y licences for good prices

got my 2y KIS 2014 retail box for under 30$ from my local retailer and upgraded it to 2015 and later to 2016 without issues

TurnOff it and thats would be enough. But even if u don't use, keep updating monthly.   I keep updating my winDefender all time, even I don't use it..  But you know, sometimes before I use new unknown software I like to scan with multiple av's.

There are guys who use kis for more than 3 years and no problems..  I got lucky and had tons of problems. :)  SO if u don't have problems with kaspersky then congratulations. :)

Well I am going with simple matter when comes av and overall pc/laptop/tablet security..   There are couple category of pc/laptop users.

1) who love to download new stuffs, test, write reviews. In same category u can say fell guys who love to download exploits/hacks for games, crack/keygens for softwares.  Also guys who love download stuffs from torrents and illegal websites...

For these guys sure u need harder protection and basic free av is not an option..  Ten u need antimalware(MalwareBytes), and great/strong av with decent firewall. Kaspersky, bit defender, avira, avast. But all with full pro version.

2) category where guys/girls sometimes download new stuffs, but like to use cracked software. Or downloading cracs/keygens. But also want be protected.. So for them enough have decent av only, if chance internet security pack..

3) guys who browsing internet, and know what they downloading, and even if they do downloading, they get software from legal websites,, do not browsing unknown pirate websites.  Avoid cracks, exploits, do not open unknown emails and so one..

For them enough even free av to block simple viruses,  plus  add's block installed in browser.

So for some guys enough simple av, for some guys even top av, antimalware combo is not enough.

If u are like in third category, then why the heck waste computing power of your laptop for av, while u can use for other stuffs.?

I choose and suggest av's which provide OK protection and eats less pc speed.

However I am not promoting any av,, if there is chance pick any from top 10,. Eset, kaspersky, bit defender, avira, panda, avg or etc..

I can suggest, but last decisions are your owns.. :)

and I did!?

do you know what's worse than MSE? a free AV - don't recall if AV Comparatives or the other site (escapes the name right now) did a free AV vs PRO tests and concluded that free AVs are shit

you're willing to put your safety on the hands of free AV, be my guest .. but please don't recommend that crap on other people, especially on people that aren't security conscious

I didn't reccomend him any particular AV, and I mentioned those 3 because they're ranked hi and because I worked with them (less with BitDefender, but I included it because it's ranked hi)

le: remembered it! AV-Test.org https://www.av-test.org/en/

I didn't say that u promoting either... I just wrote it so make sure I will not promote any particular product..  I use avg, u hate it.. So what? I don't say to download and use it.. I just tell what I use and thats it.... If he want he can use avas,t bit defeder, f-secure, pada, whatever.

SO u don't like free av's. Why? Because it don't give top protection.. Well I didn't say that with free edition u will get top protection either... I reccomend for users who do not download unknown software  from unknown websites.  Why the heck to pay for protection if u are casual pc user and mostly doing like browsing??? wasting pc power and wasting money..

Also not all free av are bad. Even lets say for example avg.. whats difference between paid and free versions??

Paid one provide firewall, antimalware. Maybe support for couple devices at same time..

What free kaspersky different from paid?  Paid one internet security provide firewall, antimalware, maybe fire fixing after virus infection.

But if I don't need them, and I need just basic av? So I use free edition.. And its nothing wrong..

Speaking about that website which link u posted.. I read info there. and u know. It didn't impress me at all.. How do u like  av's where tested in scanning process, and like 2 or 3 av;s are number 1.. How can be?

From what I know, there is always one number 1. If av is best in scanning then it is number 1. not second number 1 or fifth number one..

NExt thing. virus wolrd spin fast. Even 10 days old threat are considered old. SO even if this testing would be done like 1 months ago. It will not prove anything.. Last months maybe avast where number one, today maybe he will be maybe third.  Maybe avira be on top, maybe last one.

I know that if u want really high protection u have to study av's.  But for casual pc users enough to have simple basic protection, with option to upgrade.

Getting old is wonderful, when you consider the alternative.

Thanks, I might get avira after all but I am open for suggestions. And I belong to the 3rd category do you think I should get a firewall or is that overkill

Avira is good protection.  However I read that new version avira internet security suite don't have firewall.

In order get firewall u will have to install other protecting software.. Which can lead to point that avira and that software get in conflict and not only slow down your pc, but also decrease security overall..

Well I used free av without firewall for years, and u know, its not like every moment someone try hack in your pc or laptop.

So even with basic windows firewall u are kinda safe.   But if u still want better protection then u need paid version av with firewall in pack.

Plus I recommend you to keep active add block in your browser in order to avoid infected adds. :)

Spyware and malware are not always the same (spyware is a brand of malware, but malware isn't always spyware), and Superantispyware is well known for taking out most of the tricky little spies in your system like hard to get tracking cookies and so on. This combination is pretty standard in a lot of places and Malwarebytes support have confirmed that there's no issue with using both of them.

Now when I check AV-test Kaspersky's solution is one of the top scoring products (not the only one though), the issues you encountered and are blaming kaspersky for are troubles I've never encountered or even heard of and so I'm sorry but I don't think they're a thing. Kaspersky will however kill applications that it think is harmful, this only happened to me when I installed software that are commonly labled as "hacking tools", for most users this won't be a problem though and will only annoy advanced users that are into fiddling with "multi purpose tools".

Unless you're visiting sites that will bring unwanted attention to yourself (because that is a thing), you don't need anything other than Defender and some malware/spyware cleanser, as long as you're a normal person, living a normal life and don't have any interests for anyone to specifically target you.

What kind of real threats are you refering to? It takes care of viruses and although it's not AS good as a professionally developed AV, as long as you're not someone of interest it will work fine, Defender performs within the industry standard in most cases.

I don't know what you've been up to require complete hardware wipes...

@z123killer

My only recommendations when it comes to AV is Kaspersky and Bitdefender, though I haven't used Bitdefender in even more years than I have Kaspersky it has scored high in most AV tests I've read and it was pleasant enough to use when I did, no bad memories.

I don't know what you've been up to require complete hardware wipes...

I wrote what I know about malwares.. Here is wikipedia link, which give u more detail explanation about malwares...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware

Spywares  are in malware category...  Same with worms, keylogers..

Kaspersky, bit defender, avria, eset all most common used av's internet securities have peace of code which protect against malware...

As for keeping win defender as av.. Personally I am 100% against it,, My close friend belongs to category 1 of guys. He like to browse internet, download stuffs.  And almost every 2 months I have to wipe his harddrive reinstall os. And install  either bit denfer, kaspersky, avast, avira, or whatever other av, which he remove one he start use his pc...

I am no against any other avs in market,, i mean the ones in top 10.  However,, the final decision is not for me to make.

Personally I use at this moment avg full version.. Its not top av. But I don't need top one.. I browse networks, visit forums, websites, time to time download some stuffs.. But in 2 years period  I had not problem when comes viruses, malwares.  Haven't been infected, excluding the times when I downloaded virus packs for av/am testings, and had to infect my laptop on purpose..

So check your av   settings and enable scan tracking cookies, or simply setup that your browser clear them once u exit browser...

U recomend kaspersky, no problem. I can recomend avira, bit defender, avg, eset, f-secure, panda, norton. Probably top 10 most common used avs, and antimalwares... I have their licenses :)

Have u checked MalwareBytes scanning settings. probably it have disabled tracking cookies and inside archive scanning..

If u enable such scans probably MBam would found them too.. Plus usually av's have same options, to enable or disable scan inside archive and cookies...
Next 600 cookies.. Well if they do not  active ones,, like to redirect to certain websites, then they are no harm...
Personally I have my internet browser option to clean all cookies once I exit by browser.....

At first look I though antispyware found 600 spywares/keylogs/trojans or so.. But cookies.. Nothing important.. At least thats how I think..

Malwarebytes isn't designed to find tracking cookies, or more like they don't prioritize them, it's not the purpose of the software. Superantispyware however pride themselves in finding every single piece of code trying to track you. They're not dangerous, but they do pose some privacy "issues", personally I don't like them and I remove them.

I have taken the liberty of numbering some of your paragraphs, so I can more easily respond to them.

1. Your friend is retarded... I'm sorry, but he really must be if he can ruin his computer like that in such a short timespan, he must go to the shadiest of sites and just click on everything. He's probably a nice guy, but he needs to learn some basic internet/computer stuff.

2. Defender is actually in the top bracket of AV's, it is only lagging behind in "zero day" exploits etc. and to be fair, MS isn't an AV company so you can't demand that they keep up with the pro AV's. However this doesn't matter unless you're someone of interest, which none of us in this topic are I suspect.

3. I haven't used Panda so I won't comment on that one, though I can see that they're lagging behind in the performance category in the test I read. I used to think that eset products were pretty good, but I was forced to put them in the same category as Norton when I tried to remove it. Both Norton and eset products required (when I used them) a special tool to even be able to uninstall them, Norton also has a history of being really badly bloated and slow, as well as never ever finding anything. Norton for home users is utterly useless IMO, and a lot of security people that I have talked to have the same opinion (the business solution is good though).

4. Well that's where our opinions differ, you don't care about those trackers, and that's fine, but you should atleast inform about them, and let this user decide for himself if he wants to remove them or not. I don't like them, and so I remove them once a week. they're not really dangerous, but I don't feel like giving awy much informaton about myself even if it's just browser habits.

I don't like them, and so I remove them once a week. they're not really dangerous, but I don't feel like giving awy much informaton about myself even if it's just browser habits.

1) my friend did as some guys here claiming that win defender is enough for protection. And result is it is not enough. And he is not only 1 person which I know who had/have same situation.

2) remember that bit defender and win defender is not same.. So when u say defender I don;t know about which one u talking...

If about win def,, Then  don't bother... I tested, it failed to stop viruses and malwares to get in pc, in next test failed to trace them, and in last one failed to clean them.

If about BitDefender u talking, then sure not problem with that av utility.

However, I can repeat even thousand times, its not like I am forcing u all guys.. I just tell all  from what I have encountered.  If u want to keep win def as main av protection, fine with me. after all u guys have make final decision. And if u doubt my or any other advice. Then use google to check information about av/antimalware and basic all security news..

3) yes, some av,s even are on top for tracing threats(virus, malware, ransomwire, even infected cookies), they are not top when comes removing them.. Actually I even remember couple years ago appeared  av called g-data. it where top when comes tracing them. However when u want to remove threats, then it suck.

So yea,, some avs are better for tracing viruses signatures, some have fastest scanning engine. Some have best active resident protection..   So when someone says this or that av is best, for me sounds as template marketing talks where u talk nonsenses in order to sell your product... And I also can repeat same line, Non of existing protection software solution do not provide 100% protection. At best they can 80%.  If u want serious protection u need software which contain at least top 5 avs engines.. However pc will slow down...

4) well I can say what I wrote before,, they are not important stuff, plus even  simple av scan them, so if av trace them, why bother so that other software scan them again..

Plus I gived advice, to setup your browser so it remove tracking cookies once u exit your browser..

Getting old is wonderful, when you consider the alternative.

1. An AV can't protect against everything, it can't protect against stupidity. The tests I read are from security professionals... not random guys on the internet. If what your friend experiences is actually true, then he is stupid and he clicks everything. It's that simple, and if he doesn't have an actively scanning AV then he is toast, IMO he doesn't deserve a computer. Corporations that care about these things will spend millions trying to educate their employees, trying to make them understand and be more critical of what they click or download while at work.

2. Obviously I'm talking about Windows Defender, it's called "Defender" in Windows 10, so that's what I'm calling it.

3. You can't even have 5 AV's running on a single computer, and AV's can't protect against stupidity. Why do you think spear phishing even works?

4. The fact of the matter is that this won't always work, there are specially designed tracking cookies that will persist through such solutions, and you actually will need software like Superantispyware to get rid of them.

I'm not interested in continuing this discussion any further, and so this will be my final reply, Good day sir.

1) I can agree on matter that av can't protect for user stupidity.. Even top security solutions can't do it...
However my friend got infected not only because he click adds, but he test new programs, games. And if he want any program he download it, even it will be pirated version, cracks/keygens are usual thing  for him.

Plus he just as guys wrote here, he keep only win defender as main protection.  For person as him win defender is same as nothing...

2) windows defender indeed is named as defender.. However full name is ms windows defender. Or as I usual call winDefender to make sure I am mixing with BitDefender..

3) I wrote before and can write even thousand time again. Non of current security  suites can't provide 100% protection not even 90%. At best they can  give u like 80%. But including internet security suit  + antimalware and extra firewall and so one...

Next u can't combine like 5 av;s in one pc. Only >> NoVirusThanks< and totalvirus provide multi av scanning solution. But its for single file.

Imagine your pc having more than 3 avs. Speed reduced a lot.. Because most active files must go through these av;s.  So why waste compute power for still getting 80%..

I can even repeat what all security softwares brands advice.. Be safe, do not  click on unknown emails, do not download unknown softwares and so one...

AS for spear phishing,, my friend, I know enough how stuffs works, but I think is not right place to chat about it.. If u want then please join https://www.defcon.org/ .

4) I can repeat again, simple cookies are harmless. Plus most browsers have option to clear them on exiting browsers, plus common av's even free ones have option to scan cookies. So that spyware found only proves that av where not setup correct.  On default usual avs skip cookies, archived files.   For me I  have deep scanning, scanning all files, inside winrar/7zip/uarch.

Next to remove them is not hard matter.  Plus to keep spyware in order to keep cookies in check is just waste of pc power for nothing..

p.s I wrote my suggestions, advice and thats it.. U have own protection ideas, ok fine be me.  I will not try change your mind.. U want keep win defender as prime protection ok. its your decision...

Getting old is wonderful, when you consider the alternative.
