If you're starting out, best thing is to stick with one lens. I got two when I got my T3, and trust me, I really don't use the second one much anymore (it was $100+ extra)

 

Canon T3 is a great starter DSLR

Nikon D5100 with the 18-105 lens. As for a tripod buy the cheapest one you want, and as you grow out of it upgrade. Don't waste your money on something you might not use.

how the frag are you "getting into photography" as a 12 yr old and want to "keep it under $800"????? 

 

grab a starter DLSR then familiarize yourself with controls. Dont go and blow dough on some pro equipment that you have no idea its purpose.

I am already familiar with controls as I have used my grandpas DSLR quite a bit

well IMO $800 for "getting into photography" is too dang high. Grab a D3200 and use the kit lens until you really get a feel. then spring for a big lens.

I started filming when I was 11, I sucked until I was 14 but I still did take pictures. I love to see younger people taking an interest in photography

i think young people getting into a hobby early is great BUT spending $800 at the age of 12? ya...

yeah, I spent $50 on my 1st setup and I don't see how a 12 year old can get $800 even...

nikon vs. canon is just a matter of pepsi vs. coke I choose coke but its all a matter of taste and memories. I have great sentimental memories with canon but others may have the same with nikon

Not in this case, the D3200 is just a better camera than the 100D. Plus he gets a monopod, and a camera bag with what I listed.

EDIT: I don't care about brand (I've mentioned in other posts), but if you can find a better Cannon deal, if it is, then I will agree that it's better
