Hey there. My sister is a computer game design student and her old laptop recently croaked. She uses programs such as CAD, photoshop, and Unity. What laptop would be the best choice for these programs? If my assumption is correct, she would be looking more for cards like the firepro series rather than just a normal gaming graphics card.

Preeeetty sure normal consumer cards will be all she need. She's not doing any crazy movie quality renders that utilizes the firepro/quadro cards.

And what is she trying to look for?

Best performance to price ratio?

Best performance without going overboard?

Best mobile gaming laptop?

If a student, she doesn't need anything more than a gaming gpu for projects. When she finds a job or freelances, a necessary workstation laptop can be written off as a business expense.

Look for relatively high amounts of VRAM (2GB min, 960m or higher) for CAD, a high res screen for workflow (1920x1080 min, ideally 2560x1440), and at least 4 cores for multi-threaded applications (i7 non-U series).

Linus' reviews are usually on point for good laptops.

Expect to pay no less than 700 USD, but above 1.2k USD is possibly overkill. Since she is a student, also consider education and student discounts.
