1Gbps switch but still showing 100mbps on PC

DKM1129

Hi. I just installed a gigabit switch in my home replacing my 100mbps switch and I've run into the issue where my PC is still showing that its on a 100mbps connection. I'm using CAT 5E cable( thats not the problem because I have a PC connected directly to my router and its showing a 1Gbps connection using the same cable). Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can cure this issue?

Could be the NIC (Network Interface Controller). Do you use a seperate PCI(-e) card, or integrated ethernet port?

Is it showing the 100mbps on the ethernet port or on transfer speeds?

Check to make sure your pc is connected to the GB port on the switch and not the 100mbps Fast Ethernet ports

"Gigabit switch" doesnt mean all ports will be Gigabit. Just that it has gigabit capability

if its on the ethernet port it means you need a new nic for 1000 speeds

If its on the transfer speeds then its either your HDD thats the bottleneck or its whatever you are transferring to

Actually, if you go to Network and Sharing Center, click the Ethernet card, go to Properties, Configure, Advanced, and if you can, try to:

  • Disable "Auto Disable Gigabit"
  • Set "Speed & Duplex" to either "Auto Negotiation" or "1.0 Gbps Full Duplex"

Should work if your NIC supports gigabit.

That wont help. I run cat5e for everything and I get GB speed on my network.

if it only would work that way. just plug it in and it works full speed? aaaa, no. there are some settings on networking in windows you gotta go thru. youll find something like: set to full speed or some shit like that, youll know what is the right one when you see it.
