MOBO and CPU upgrade

Hi everyone,

 

So I am interested in to upgrading my MOBO and CPU, I currently have GA-970A-D3 mobo and an AMD FX8120 black edition, with a resent OC to 3.9, I have for cooling a Hyper EVO 212

 

My GPU (I know is making a bottle neck, I got a great deal that couldn't let go) GTX 970 and I have 8 GB ram of Hyper X

 

Any recommendations, on what to get or how to proceed, I really want a mobo with chipset 990fx, like GA-990FXA-UD3 R5, and maybe upgrading to a AMD FX 8320, but I am not sure.

 

The PC will be use for gaming only

If you're going to upgrade your mobo and CPU, get an i5 4690k or, if you're willing to also buy DDR4 RAM, i5 6600k. As for the mobo, there are loads of good Z97 and Z170 boards out there, pick one you like the look, price and features of.

GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 and a 8350 black, would not be bottle-necked by a 970 in most games. the 212 if not going hard on the oc, should be fine. if you are looking to go bigger than the 8350, then just go to intel as the price to preformance even with oc'ing isnt there. Cheers ~

If you're doing gaming only, then right now going with AMD is a really bad choice. AMD is currently suited for workstation tasks with their high multi-threaded performance, but poorly suited to thread limited tasks like gaming with their poor single-threaded performance due to their old, aging architecture.

The cheaper locked i5 will beat even an FX-9590 in gaming.

 

Also, if you're planning on getting new ram, then going skylake is the correct choice. I stuck with haswell though because I didn't think you were interested in swapping memory.

Well the reason is that I am on a budget, so going with an Inter processor, will go a little over the mark

You should not grab a 990FX board if you are on a budget a 970 board with better VRMs is a better idea and OC the FX-8120 further or you can go for a FX-6300 if you do not need much more multi threaded performance that is... (also what game has the bottleneck?)

Save up some more money, spending all that cash on an AMD CPU and associated mobo is not worth it for a gaming machine. Keep the machine you have until you can afford an Intel based system with either a 4690k or a 6600k.

Did you look at my cheaper intel build? It's literally $15 more expensive than the cheapest AMD FX-8 cpu/mobo combo that doesn't have shit VRMs, which would be this:

And that's the 8320, not even the 8350. The i5-4460 spanks these CPUs, and even at stock clocks beats an OC'd FX-9590 in gaming benchmarks.

 

That's around 5% more in price for nearly 60% more performance. I can't imagine not doing it since your only specified purpose is gaming.

Or Zen, if it ends up being competitive with Intel CPUs for gaming purposes, which hopefully it does. However, as it stands at the moment, the sensible choice for high end gaming is an unlocked i5 based system, in my opinion.

I am happy with my FX-8370 but I am not playing anything that is problematic such as Arma, DayZ or Dying Light!

Hey I didn't see this comment, I have check this builds, and they do not look bad, I like better the build with the i5 4690k, but it may be hard to find that mobo, I have a loot of troubles to get things sent to Mexico, but I will look for it, do you have any other recommendations?

 Any Z97 chipset board will do. I only selected that one because it was the cheapest here. The different market really changes things, and I have no way of suggestion exact parts since I don't know your local prices.
