Does a PSU failure that causes other component failure look different thant psu failure that just breaks the psu? How so? How often is psu failure catastrophic?

(My friends PSU failed and I've never had that happen before he was playing a game and his pc shut off and won't turn on. It isn't getting power.)

I have an Anet A8 as my project printer and a i3 MK3 for when I want things to work.

I extrude my own filament and haven't saved a penny yet.

My PC:

Spoiler

CPU: Intel i7 8700k

Motherboard: MSI Z370-A Pro

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V (2x8GB) DDR4-3200

If it makes a loud ass POP ( my grandmas did) its not a good thing, most likely SOMETHING died. But if it died quietly then MAYBE you have a chance

Quietly. Is thir any physical signs of catastrophic failure? (I would boot the PC but... he is still awaiting his new evga psu)

You wouldn't notice anything wrong. Anyway, cant you test it with your PSU? I know its a pain in the ass but thats all i got.

Welp, Seems like all hes got is to wait. He can take it to a PC repair shop and they can test what parts are still working or not. But it costs money.

Yep, he can either spend a bit at a repair place or wait for the new PSU and hope for the best (being nothing else was damaged).

I can diagnose the pc once he gets the new psu so I'll just wait and hope for him. Thanks. :)
