I recently started working remotely from home one day per week and for that purpose I have added an old crappy 17" 4:3 monitor to my primary 1080p display (BenQ GW2270)

I really like this dual monitor setup for my work and leisurely browsing the web, but of course, they are an ugly match and the colour difference is terrible.

In my free time I play games like Fallout, Skyrim and various strategy/management games for which I don't need a second monitor.

Would a 21:9 display give me the best of both worlds?

Also, I'm sitting a good 1,5m (5,5 feet) away from my monitor, at this distance the 22" 1080p display looks a bit small. Would 2560x1080 be good enough on a 34" display or should i go for 3440x1440? I'm asking because my budget is a bit limited at €400-500 and adding the same 1080p display (or even two) I already have is a lot cheaper.

I'm using a XFX R9 380X graphics card.

I use a 21:9in from LG and my screen is roughly 1m from me and it's perfect in my opinion. double monitors is horrible - you have to go single or triple to avoid a bar in the centre of your vision.

Do you have a 2560x1080 or 3440x1440? I don't mind the screen edges, i've got one screen in the center and one off to the side. I'm not looking for a surround gaming experience, I use the second screen purely for office and browsing purposes.

2560x1080 isn't worth it from my personal experience.

Single 3440x1440 34" is ideal, or 2 x 24" 1080p.

2560x1080 is that bad, even at 29" perhaps?

one 21:9 is recommended for gaming, 2 screens is recommended for productivity

this is just my personal preference

best combo = 21:9 + 16:9 for gaming + productivity :D

You don't feel that the 'spilt creen' functionality is as good as having 2 displays? Mind you I'm using a 4:3 screen as a secondary display, so i'm used to the "squared" look.

nah, i still prefer to have 2 seperate monitors, and you can use your 4:3 display as a secondary display xD

btw i dont think anyone would use 2 monitor for gaming, because the middle part would be at the bezel am i not correct?

True, But I never intended to use 2 monitors for gaming. That 4:3 monitor goes out the window when i get my new display, I never want that ugly thing on my desk again :P

But all jokes aside: can I really count the pixels on a 2560x1080 34" display? The cheapest 34" 3440x1440 i can find is priced at about €650, and thats beyond my budget. :(

its a personal preference thing... i dont see a why you shouldnt go with it

some people have experienced high end hardware and cant go back, its like going back from SSD to HDD

if you're moving your way up, you would probably perceive it as an improvement

Thanks! I guess I'll do it then.

Does Displayport vs HDMI make a difference on the same display?

im not sure into details but iirc, displayport supports high refresh rates like 144hz or something

but HDMI 2.0 can do it too, though its a new standard so you might wanna check if your monitor and gpu both supports it

get someone to confirm what i said above is true or false, as im not into gaming at high refresh rates so i didnt study heavily into this field xD

2560x1080 (started with a 3440x1440 but wasnt as thrilled compared to the 1080p option as I thought I would be so i got a refund and went 2560x1080 and pocketed the remainder for a rainy day (or when 3440x1440 becomes sub-$600).

I game occasionally but mainly I use my 21:9 for professional apps like Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver among others.
