Ok so i was playing Cities Skylines the other day with a population of just over 270k and the game for lack of better words was sh*ting its self, all the traffic was stuttering and it was slow af.
So i did some reading and people were saying to get rid of your system page file so Windows stops dumping stuff on it and just uses your RAM, I also found out it was using my SSD for paging.
So i did that and boom the game was running as smooth as it did with no population.

So on to the fun part, the past 2 days though since i did it i have noticed when playing games it will just crash and windows will give me an error saying im out of memory, But my RAM never goes over 7GB out of the 16GB available to the system. I think it can be fixed by making a page file again but i dont want to. I have noticed for some reason games load faster now and GTA V loading is faster, and i want to be able to play Cities Skylines.

What do i do, do i live with the memory crashes to keep faster loading times and a playable huge population city, or do i just make a new page file and go back to lagy 10fps city and old load times?

Or is there something ells i can do?

don't mess with the page file, let Windows manage it

Yeah but 1: it was managing it on my SSD. and 2: deleting it and forcing it all to be stored on the system RAM i have noticed speed increases with loading times and smoothness of bigger games and it makes Cities Skylines playable.

So imo the page file can go f**k its self lol, unless would it be possible to make a RAM disk and have the page file on that????

and lack of pagefile will fck you in the end

software that needs the pagefile will start to behave erratically if it doesn't have access to it

if RAM usage won't go above 7GB isn't pagefile problem it's a game developer problem

---

out of curiosity, do a HD Tune (read test) on the SSD

The page file is there for data to be cached when the system is getting low on RAM, but windows doesnt know how to manage it so it fills it up before the RAM gets even 1/4 filled, by deleting the page file your forcing the windows to only use the RAM for caching data which makes the program read it faster cause its on the RAM and not a drive.

Very much no. There are certain parts of every program that are written to run on the page file and not the system RAM.

you are seeing better performance because the game was coded badly and it's quite possibly suffering from a memory leak

The reason you are getting the "Out of memory" error and system crash is because you got rid of your page file and so your OS had to try to keep every piece of every program on your RAM. That builds up really quick. Its not the game that is using up all the RAM, its every piece of software running on the system.

Read the response about 1/4 of the way down this page with the picture of RAM usage for a better understanding of page files.

The reasons that City Skylines wont use more than 7GB of RAM is because it is programmed to use that much. When game developers are writing the games code, they have to keep in mind the system specs of the avg person's computer system. These days 8GB is considered the norm, and anything above that is entering into the enthusiast/professional realm. If you are running into memory errors while playing it is most likely the games coding/overloading of the RAM capacity. That game is known to have lots of issues. I don't own the game myself, but from what I have read on it I don't think there is much you can do. City Skylines is also a very CPU instensive game, so that could be part of the performance issue as well.

Sorry i should have clarified but Cities Skylines has never crashed cause of ram to this point, only other games have been. and from usage of programs and tasks my system gets to about 6-7GB some times might go to 9 if i got lots of stuff open.

Should i maybe put 2 page files in, 1 on 1 HDD and the other on the 2nd HDD and then will it maybe be faster then just the 1 Page file on the SSD?

it's not about speed, it's about the fact that if pagefile is accessed frequently, it will fuck up your SSD in ways you can not imagine

this is why I hinted you do a HD Tune read test on the SSD
