My macbook pro 2010ish isn't working no more, it won't boot up. They told me to buy a new ssd and install it to my macbook instead of going to apple and charge you alot more.

What do i need to install a new os on the new ssd or do i just replace the new ssd and it will start up by itself?

You will need a flash drive or optical media with the OS on it, and then you will install that onto your SSD.

do you know where i can get the os and do you know a video i can follow ?

You should be able to purchase a copy of OS X or perhaps request a disc of the OS from Apple. If what I saw is correct, your MacBook has an optical drive. Is that correct?

Scratch that. Apparently, you can get it from here: http://www.amazon.com/Mac-Yosemite-10-10-5-Bootable-USB/dp/B00S4ZIO88/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1457925343&sr=1-1&keywords=Mac+OS+X

Nope, you gotta install the OS. Do you want to keep your existing files or start fresh with a new copy of Mac?

I might just start fresh because my computer won't boot up no more it just keeps restarting over and over and never actually starts

Yes it has a optical drive and is there a way to get it free online and i can just put it on a usb? or is the disc you request at apple free?

The version that I linked in my updated post costs about $11, which is really just the flash drive I think. The OS itself is free.

Apple market it as a "free upgrade" for existing OSX/Mac users, rather than being free overall. It's not available for free download outside of the App store, so I guess you do pay for the OS license if you don't already have some version of OSX. Sort of like the Windows 10 update, it seems like.

Still, $11 isn't much at all, so I'm just nit-picking, really.

I've never dealt with it, so I don't know 100% at all. Someone with experience would know better than me - do you have experience with Mac OS X?

Not too much with the recent OSX iterations. I did have to reinstall OSX Yosemite on a laptop to get it ready for sale fairly recently, though. I know that it's kind of a massive pain to get the OS without already having OSX installed.

I basically had to go through the steps you would do with a hackintosh to get an older version of OSX installed so that I could update to Yosemite. There's no legitimate way to get the files outside of the Apple eco-system (when I was doing it, at least), unlike Windows ISO files.

So basically, you would still need to pay for Snow Leopard or whatever to properly reinstall the OS?

Well, Apple say that the OS is a free upgrade for existing Mac users, so theoretically the OS should be free for OP. However, there's no easy (legitimate) way of getting the OS outside of the App store without paying as far as I can see. You could probably take it to Apple for them to install the "free" OS, but there would undoubtedly be costs for the service. (might still be worth checking if Apple will do it for free, though).

As the OS isn't freely available outside of the App store, and is only marketed as a "free upgrade" for Mac/OSX users, rather than being free itself, I assume getting the files for free outside of the App store would be considered piracy, so I can't really help with that.

EDIT: Really, just paying the $10 or so for the OS USB is the easiest way.

And of course, as a Moderator, I would not want you to anyways as that would make me a hypocrite.

@chronic2k It seems that Apple will send out disks for the original OS that came on your Mac for a "small fee" (I don't know how much). Might be worth giving them a call to check how much it would cost. Having the disks to fall back on at a later date may help if your drive fails, or when you come to sell.
