Ethernet cable

Ok so in my room I have a telephone jack in my room. I can't do that much work but can I plug this bad boy in and get internet? Ethernet thingy Just wondering don't bash me with a rock.

Sorry but no. To get inet from a phone line you need a modem ( that terrible ADSL stuff ). If you want to use it to make lan so you don`t have to put more cables again no. Phone companies use different cables and in most cases there are only 2 wires in the RJ11 jack and you need 4 for 100 mbit and 8 for gigabit. Even if you have 4 wires they don`t use cat5 cable so sorry but no.

As others have said. No.

 

However, some installers/telephone cable technicians use cat5/cat5e for the telephone Jack because it's often just as cheap and they usually have it in excess.

 

Take off the faceplate for the wall plate and see what kind of cable it uses. If its cat5/e then you could rewire it on both ends (you would have to trace the cable to the telephone box where the outside line enters your house).

 

You would still need to run a patch cable from the telephone box to your modem/router/switch though.

 

What kind of internet do you have? What kind of cable plugs into your modem?
