Has anybody here got a Powercool Hyper X Viper modular 850W 80plus bronze rated power supply as i have just had to replace my brothers psu after only 2 years of low usage he only has an AMD A10 7850K with 2 HDDs and 1 Optical drive and it blew up just wondered if this was a common problem or not. It went up with sparks and flames in the end but didn't damage any components in the PC which was good.

I will post a picture of the power supply later as i am at work at the mo.

Really ive had them before any no problems and it was never under a heavy load with no GPU 300w max no no where near full load

Yeah, chances are, the OEM was probably formed in the back of some shitty Chinese van.

Guessing the "tolerances" were not very high when the psu were made, so it managed to fail when under a moderate load...

I doubt it's still under warranty so let's get you started on a new PSU! Check out the PSU whitelist in my sig.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Top Amazon review:

I bought one of these about 8 months ago and all was well running 1 7970 @ 360w inc hdd, mobo and fans.

After i upgraded my graphics cards to 2 7970s this was not the case is lasted a further 6 weeks then caught fire!

Not popped a capacitor or me exaggerating, actual flames. there was an electrical burning smell so i rushed to check all household items plugged i then as i check the computer dancing flames from the rear of the supply, melted connectors and 1 lead (pcie 6+2 x 2) lead had actually fused together but the psu was still running, luckily no damage was caused to pc of graphics card, if i hadnt been in things could have been a lot worse

Amazon were great about this and sent a replacement straight away.

I used another psu i had xfx 850s powered everthhing back up and all was well.

The replacement x viper 850 arrived , plugged in and 30 mins later blew and tripped the house.

I could be unlucky with 2 faulty units but would strongly advise against buying this

Buy the xfx 850s instead, i have 2 both will run everything without any issues and have served me well.

i like linux

Yer mine was the same it wouldnt boot up where i ahd so i moved the PC to a test area with a different cable plugged it in and turned it on and got sparks then flames inside the PSU so instantly pulled the cable then got lent a PSU from a local Computer store (which pulled a brand new one off the shelf for me) that i am good friends with and it booted straight away a few stress tests later i was happy the system was good so got a temporary PSU for it for now. Might try the warranty route on it see what happens.
