GTX 970 not boosting?

xDanielxOossiex

Hey guys!

I was playing Bf4 and The Crew on a LAN party and I saw that my gpu has a slower core clock when in these games (it doesn't happen with GTA5).

When I'm on desktop, the core clock is higher than when in-game.

When I'm playing a game, the gpu is under 100% load, and 40 degrees celcius.

Main gaming pc: Lian-Li Lancool II Mesh Performance - Ryzen 5 5600X - MSI GTX1080Ti Armor - AMD Wraith Spire RGB - ASUS TUF Gaming B550 Plus - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 2x8GB 3200MHz - 500GB M.2 (and a few other drives)

Gaming laptop: ASUS GL552VW: i7 6700HQ - GTX960M 2GB - 8GB DDR4 2166Mhz RAM - 1TB 7200RPM HDD

Download GPUZ and look on sensors and tell us what PerfCap you get.

When Battlefield 4 isn't running, it says Util.

When Battlefield is running, it says Pwr.

Ok PWR PerfCap means you GPU isn't getting enough power (volts) to sustain the clock speed you want to hit. Turn up your volts in MSI Afterburner.

Each GPU is different, turn it up bit by bit until the PWR PerfCap no longer shows up. If adding more voltage no longer helps then reduce your clockspeed. Also in MSI Afterburner turn up your power limit to the highest it will go.

I think I have some different settings. In MSI Afterburner, I see:

Core Voltage (mV) - +35

Core clock (Mhz) - +0

Shader clock (Mhz) - I can't slide the slider

Memory clock (Mhz) - +0

Fan speed (%) - I have it on 60% all the time.

You might need to go into the options/settings to unlock your voltage settings and power options. I have a modded bios to run 1670MHz on the core and 8000MHz memory so my MSI Afterburner looks wonky.

What coreclock is it actually running? Because it can't be anywhere near what it's supposed to with temps like that.

He said 40 degrees under 100% load. That doesn'st strike you as odd? And might have something to do other than the millivolts?

Yeah... he's hitting a PWR PerfCap like he said, so it's not boosting and running cool, he's at 60% fan speed too that's a very fast speed.

Find out it the power limit was on 50%. Now set it to 110%

No it's probably running some low power clock due to the card either not physically receiving power (I.E. improper PEG connector) or the GPU is stuck at P8 or P12.

EDIT: or he's a bellend and set the power limit to 50%...

Okay now relaunch a game and see what the core speed and memory clocks hit. Also see what the PerfCaps pop up.

Actually it was probably set to 50% from stock? No need to call OP a bellend, most 970s are very low power state cards and heavily restricted for it.

No, they never roll out of the factory with 50% powertargets. His signature features overclocking stats, he fiddled with it and got stuff wrong.

But it would still boost up to where it was supposed to, and it still wasn't 50%. I'd say EVGA is pretty damn stupid to ship a unit that can't compete in out-of-the-box testing by reviewers. And EVGA isn't stupid.

Your problem with powertargets would only be a deal with overclocking.

Not everyone is a genius like you mate, he tried clocking it but didn't increase is Power target, I've been there myself. So I must be a nob head too because I didn't instantly know how to overclock the 970? Please, impart all your wisdom, maybe you can do that probe thing that Paul does in the film and instantly drops all the universes secrets on to the main characters.
