So, we are finally getting of this crazy slow 7Mb down .35Mb up and going to 50Mb down 7Mb up ( Best internet we can get in my town ), So I need/want a dual-band  wireless modem/router combo. ( Not very knowledgeable in the networking topic though almost certain this is what I need ). Going to be hooked up via a cable line if that makes a difference. My parents want to keep it below $105.

I can vouch for the C7 since I own one. However, with a 50mb connection you can probably get a even cheaper option.

Please quote if you want a person to reply, they won't get a notification otherwise.

We do plan on upgrading once other options come into play, one company is going to be offering 100-200Mb within the next year and another is planning on 200+ as well.

I have a 500 megabit connection (benefits of Hong Kong). The lan supports up to gigabit speeds. The wifi realistically goes from 150 - 200 megabits. The range on it isn't massive though and it can't penetrate more than 2 walls.

Got a Old computer or Laptop? (preferably pc so you can add NICs), pfSense Check it out, super easy and potenially way better and definitely cheaper(if you ahve an old pc)

also not sure if you live with your parents or not, but this would allow you to easily VPN to you parents home and possibl help them with a problem they are having.

It'll only have to go through 1 wall and the house isn't to big, the furthest it will have to go is the basement and the dude ( brother in law ) who is down there couldn't tell the difference between 3Mb and 1GB if it hit him in the face.

Great idea! Though just got into the whole "pc" thing like last year and still working on my first custom PC lol, My laptop is still used for school or I'd have no problem using that.

Im sure you can find like a core duo PC on craiglist or thrift shop, just keep your eye out, its extremely affordable and the parts by no means have to be new, I myself and using a old hp pc core duo , 4 gb of ddr2 , and a 80gb HDD, with 2 Gb NIc's (i was lucky and got some old ones from work) and It beats and router I have ever had, my wifi could be better, since wifi is a must  you can either buy an access point or a pci wireless card and use that to broadcast straight from the tower.

Like I said an option, pfsense is extremely easy to setup, ( you could even DL vmware and make a virtual machine with pfsense and check it out!! you can even see how well your laptop could act as a router)

It's a great idea, and I would do it if it was my money being used though it's not, it's my parents money and even though I probably could set it up fairly easily, I'd rather just stay simple for now and try that later if we ever need a new router/modem. My mother keeps saying the email says Wireless Modem though going to have her email them just in case as my grandparents got a modem/router combo when they got their internet from the same company. ( the one they provided, we would use this one but it's $12 a month for 2 years lol, yeah nope )
