Hey,

If I was to get a new router (for example, the Asus RT-AC5300 :P), is all I'd have to do is remove the old router, plug the co-ax cable into it and run the power adapter to the wall?

I'm a bit of a dumb with this kind of thing so help is appreciated :3

I don't think so, since most routers do not have Coaxial inputs.  Including that Asus router you mention.

Usually the connections go like this:

Router from your ISP-------- New router ------ Everything in your house.

Mystery is the source of all true science.

I just bought a new router a week ago, and the way I was told it should be setup was Connect the ISP router to the port label WAN in the new router with an ethernet cable,  then I was supposed to disable a setting call DHCP in the old router, but when ever I changed that setting all my network would lose the connection to the internet.

At the end all I had to do was leave the routers on their default configuration, plug the ethernet cable to the WAN port and everything worked perfectly.

The router I bought is a cheap DIR-850L that was on sale,  and is unbelievably better than the router from my ISP.

Mystery is the source of all true science.

I bought a DIR-868L recently, it works great. As someone else mentioned all you need is a ethernet wire connected from your current ISP router to the one you purchase. From there you can network all your other devices through it. What exactly did you intend to use it for?

Well, I'm not intending to get that beautiful and yet expensive Asus router that I posted above, but I'd love to get a new router to replace this ISP one because I need something that looks nice and is also better for the space I'll have on my new table configuration

Uhm, WHAT? If what you are saying is true you are still using the router part of your ISP's multimodem? And using the new one as just an AP... :P

Look for an option called "bridge mode" or call your ISP and ask them about it! :)

Sry, probably won't happen as you will have to keep your ISP's multimodem in most circumstances

I am aware of that, and that bridge mode is what I ask my ISP to change, they said all  I had to do was disable DHCP, I have done that in many routers before, but for some reason it doesn't work with my own. I tried disabling it in the isp router and in my new router, both cause a failure in the internet access.  I have no idea how it's working right now, but it is. xD

Uhm, it should only be done in the ISP's router, and it should be on in your own...

I tried both, and if I change ANYTHING, I lose internet.

On the plus side, everything is loading much faster than before, so even if the system is wasting time consulting with both routers, is faster than it was before.   I'm getting 5 ms pings to some servers. :P

Hmmm Difficult.

If you just Disable DHCP and get the Adresses right etc.
It will Work...

But you are still having NAT on and you likely will experience some Problems with that configuration.

So Bridge mode should be your Option, what routers do you use?

Huawei HG8245H from my isp, and dlink DIR-850L that I just bought.

If you would want to correct that configuration:

Set up Bridge Mode on the Huawei:

https://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet-data/equipment/huawei/hg630b-gateway/setup-bridge-mode-huawei-hg630b/

After that it depends on how your Internet connection is made up.

You seem to have a DSL, which sometimes need logins (PPPoE)
Some Business Internet connections with fix IP you would need to configure the new ip on your dlink Router.

Maybe it will work right away without further configuring

But it would be worth a try I think. Experiment and Expand your Network knowledge :-)

I have optic fiber.   And the menu in my router has nothing that can be edited under any of the tabs named WAN.

That means your ISP has locked it, and only they can change it ;)
