A friend of mine recently tried to turn on his computer, only to be greeted by a burning smell, with the lights and fans coming on for about half a second.  He decided to continue to try to turn it on, with the same result. After opening up his computer, he found the source of the smell to be his 660 Ti, which is about 2 years old. Later, he tried another friend's 270x in the same slot, to no avail. His PSU is an Inland 600w that came with his prebuilt pc, which I'm worried could have been the reason for his fried card (I'd personally never put an Inland PSU in my rig, I've never heard of 'em). In the past, I've used cards for 3 to 4 years and not had any issues. His plan is just to buy a new card (not sure what kind) and put it in the other PCI-E slot, but I don't want him to fry another card.

I'd like a second opinion, and maybe some ideas regarding how I might go about testing the PSU, to avoid another fried card.

Thanks in advance.

PSU sounds fried, could've taken out the GPU with it though! Try the 660ti in another PC?

If Google serves, Inland is Microcenter's house brand, if that makes sense. No one seems to know what they're rebranded from (including Jonnyguru I guess), only that they aren't very good. I'd replace it if possible. And if the GTX 660 Ti is only two years old, it may still be covered under warranty.

I would replace the power supply and get something that is a good quality brand like EVGA, Corsair, Cooler Master, Be Quiet, Silverstone, and Fractal Design. And if it was only the graphics card not working the PCI Express slot might still work after you replace the power supply its a good idea to test the PCI Express slot that that graphics card that got fried was in to make sure nothing else got fried like the motherboard.

Thanks everyone for your input, it confirmed my belief that the PSU should be replaced (And also made me realize that the motherboard could have been fried as well, seeing as at least one of the slots doesn't work). Hopefully he can be more easily swayed into buying a new PSU now.

So my friend decided to ignore my input, and got a new graphics card. Last night, I got a snapchat from him saying he had been woken up by a small pop/explosion. It was his power supply (he had left his computer on overnight)

Long story short, I, and everyone else here, was right.

@Implosion

Hopefully he learns his lesson now.

I would enjoy telling him "I told you so!" very much in your stead.

I did a little research on Inland and it looks like their PSUs are rebrands of Leadman Electronics power supplies. Leadman also made/makes power supplies for Powmax and Cheifmax which are known for being total trash. It seems likely that the power supply killed his GPU. I would replace it ASAP so that it doesn't kill anything else.
