General ideas to help

For this topic I honestly didn't know where to post it but this seemed fine, but to get to the point I need a communities help with answering this question and this question is asked pretty frequently, "How do I learn how to program?" This is a looming question that I have asked multiple people and I always get the same answers, "Learn this language." Now, the reason I don't find this answer appealing at all is because I don't know where to go from there. In the end I always ask myself what to do with that language and where to apply it. More importantly where is the fun? Now some could argue that programming is a tedious task and requires multiple hours of dedication but explain the fun and the addiction in it. I personally want to get into programming because game development seems appealing and it is something I have always been fascinated with,  but again where is the programming applied? Where is it fun? How does it affect the engine? To wrap this up I just wanted to know what you guys think because I feel this community knows more than a large portion of others.
