I cracked the screen on my HTC one m8 a few weeks ago and I had this wonderful idea to try and replace it myself. Today the new glass arrived and I started to dissemble the phone. All was going great until I got the old display assembly off. That is when I noticed that between the glass and the digitizer is a black film. What is this and can I get it? So with some research on this strange film, I was reading that I need to buy the whole screen assembly. Is true? I love finding this out with my phone completely dissembled.

it looks like you just bought the glass. while it is possible to replace just the glass, it is very difficult and i would recommend buying the whole display assembly. but if you are feeling adventurous you could find a guide on how to do a glass only repair

Buying the glass(Digitizer only) in this case is not worth it. You have to have tools that easily separate the glass and LCD and you will have to get a UV light and loca to adhere the glass to the LCD.

The black film you are talking about is most likely the polarizer film that allows you to actually see the screen instead of just the white backlight.

The phone is completely dissembled with the lcd and glass separated. On Monday I am going to contact the company and do a refund/replacement for a lcd and glass already fused together. I guess this is what happens when trying to go the cheap route.
