Are we going to see another blunder to the likes of the SimCity launch? Or do we think that EA has learned its lesson? I hope they are prepared but I have a feeling there are going to be a very rough few weeks at least.

Well I hope they realised that MANY people will be playing. From that they should have prepared themselves with a lot of servers. If they didn't then I'll just be sitting there facepalming.

Did Blizzard ever improve their launches of anything even though they always knew it was a mess? No.
The simple answer is, it is tough to very much impossible, to have a good launch of a title with restrictions like SimCity and the popularity of EA.
So unless they don't go with the SimCity style restrictions the launch will be a massacre.

With Battlefield 4, wouldn't they allow 3rd-party server hosting like they did in all the previous Battlefield games? (at least on the PC side of things)

I wouldn't expect them to have a central server system fail as hard as Simcity did, because I don't think that they're going to be running any central server system other than the one for the Battlelog.. Launches of major titles can be rough at first, but I don't think this one will be too bad. (don't mind me,, just trying to remain optimistic here)

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

The Sim City servers were controlled by Maxis I do believe and EA didn't give them as many servers as they did not expect there to be so much traffic towards those servers. As for BF4, EA know how much of a big game it is, furthermore the game is not locked down the the control of EA (the servers needed to be hosted by EA for the DRM thing) for BF4, anyone will be able to host a server for the game, so it should be fine. As for downloading the game off of Origin... well.... I personally expect that to go very slowly...

EA? Learned something? Don't think so. I've seen GameSpy crashing when BF2142 beta keys came. I know, not EA directly but they owned that at the time. When BC2 lauched EA master servers were down most part of launch weekend. With BF3 it was

Still even if all servers that ppl will go to play are 3rd party hosted, 50M simultanious (maybe more) connections to their master server = lagg. I just hope they use beta as stress benchmark.
