We just got the T6i. I had used the T4i before and so I went with the T6i since it was newer.

Really depends on what you're using it for so I can't make any specific recommendations.

Look into the T5i or a 60D/70D, those are pretty good. Getting something like the T5i or 60D would leave you some nice room for glass as well :D

For that money i would buy a nikon d7100, with a 35mm lens and some sort of backpack. (or save to buy some other lens)

I dare say most DSLRs under $1000 are good at doing what they are designed to do.

If you are looking for a stills camera, Pentax is brand to consider alongside Canon and Nikon. The Pentax K-3 plus 18-135mm lens kit is about $990 from B&H. It's on par with Canon and Nikon's offerings that come in at about $1100-1300 (i.e. 70D, D7100, D7200) For stills, the performance is similar to the more expensive cameras. Lower down the Pentax food chain there is the K-S2 at around $700 for two-lens kit. ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1116181-REG/pentax_11610_k_s2_dslr_camera_with.html ) Should you choose this kit or similar, that would leave you with 300 for other stuff, for example $40 Amazon Basics DSLR backpack with laptop slot, $70 tripod (decent quality), $40 cleaning supplies, $100 for Pentax 35mm f2.4 (or swap this for $90 pentax 50mm f1.8), and have ~$60-80 leftover for misc accessories.

(To be transparent [if you care], I myself use Canon stuff, but Pentax is an undeniable value.)

tldr:

pros of pentax

- better value (specs/$, handling is about on par)

- good lens selection (similar to cannon/nikon)

cons of pentax

- no CaNikon name brand

- worse video (noticeable but visibly better than smartphones)

This would be better. The 50mm will be more worth the price than the zoom lens. And the flash/wide angle and telephoto lens seem to be better quality.

But the T6i is a bit lackluster compared to the Nikon equivalents D3300 and D7200.
