I'm looking to get a laptop for my uncle, he doesn't need any graphical horsepower, just a pace to write down his thoughts and browse the web. I want to get him a quad core, however, i dont want to get him an amd based laptop if i dont have to. All i can find on newegg are dual core intel cpus with hyperthreading, even at the i7 level, unless I spend out of budget. The budget is $650, although lower would be preferable.

Well, there are atom / celron and pentium j and n series laptops. Those are quad cores , but they are beat in terms of performance by the dual core celerons.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Go AMD, the A10s will beat even most mobile i5s easily.

Yeah, most laptop processors are dual core with hyper threading due to heat restrictions.

So basically at this price range would i be better off getting an a8/a10 or a core i5?

Do you need to be that specific, if his needs are so minimal?

Sounds like a Lenovo Ideapad 100s will do the trick.

Yes, especially the apu laptops, aince most i5's around that price are dual cores with HT

A10 is superior to any i5 except the 6300HQ

could you look at the above two links and tell me which you would choose?

HP definitely. The 8700P is Carrizo

I know carrizo would have better igpu performance, but wouldnt it be slightly slower in cpu due to the lower clock speed? Carrizo is only like a 10% IPC difference right?

Carrizo is a better CPU AND GPU.

I know that its better, but is it only slightly better or is it good enough to make up the huge difference in clock speed?
