Hello there, so I am currently in the process of putting money aside for my new PC build, I allready have a GPU in mind but I was wondering what you peeps think I should go for in term's of my cpu before I go ahead and buy a new motherboard.

The things I am looking to do on my pc and allready do are as follows.

* Video Editing for friends

* 3D modeling on Maya

* Texture work with Adobe Photoshop

* PC Gaming (Currently a couple of AAA titles aswell as Planetside 2 and Guildwars 2)

* Game Modding (such as skyrim and the like)

* Scripting

* Text Editing (dunno why this matters probs not but Im listing stuff I do)

* Currently learning how to do animating

Anyway's I hope somebody can give me some advice, the budget for my new pc is £1200-£1300 just to add that in.

Thankyou very much for your time. x

Both, I work from home, I do some payed work for my friends who run some private servers on multiple games but also have a day job, I kinda split my PC time half and half between working on projects and gaming

A Core i7-6700 or 6700K will be perfect for you needs, if you can afford it. If not, you can opt for a Xeon with similar specs as the i7, as Xeons are very much cheaper than i7 CPUs due to the exclusion of Intel HD Graphics.

Nothing to see here ;)

i was thinking maybe a xeon because the more cores for the workstation aspects of it

any links for these processors maybe ? sorry to be a pain

Take these CPUs into consideration:

  • Intel Core i7-6700k (Overclock it)
  • Intel Core i7-4790k (Overclock it)

(Water cool both as well)

I will most likely end up water cooling if not figure out how to do a custom water loop, but its kinda a shame really, I allways thought the pipes in most water cooler's dont look very, lets say ascteticly pleasing

for any specific reasson exactly or ? sorry Im kinda analitical so I like explanations toward reassoning hehe :3

An i7 has got 4 cores, and Hyper-Threading. Hyper-Threading refers to intelligent scheduling of processing tasks, and makes the Operating System recognize one single core, as two logical cores, capable of taking on 2 threads simultaneously. With a total of 8 threads, the i7/Xeon hits the sweet-spot between performance and price, when it comes to workstation-grade performance.

Also the i7-5820k has got 6 cores/8 threads, and is priced just a few bucks more than the i7-6700K, but you also need to get a more expensive motherboard (X99 Chipset/LGA-2011v3) for that.

Nothing to see here ;)

Ok Bookmarked thanks, suprised to not see a single amd entry here to be honest, I suppose maybe they dont fit into the workstation whole thing well, quite intresting none the less

AMD fall well behind the top INTEL CPU's in single threaded performance.

PS. Nice name LOL

AMDs Opteron CPUs are for workstations but I would not even consider them "Prosumer". Unlike Xenons. But an i7 will give you the best all round performance for what you need. Personally I would not go near the 5820k based on these RESULTS.

an i7 5960x for editing could be used, it is expensive for an i7 (some will say that this is over kill, but depending on the editing you are doing can be a life saver) and it falls in your price range on amazon it  (would give the best of both worlds)http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Extreme-Processor-Socket-2011-V3/dp/B00N1O4RRY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457086756&sr=8-1&keywords=i7+5960x

or a xeon

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-E5-2670V3-Processor-LGA2011-v3-Socket/dp/B00NFNYYJW/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1457086481&sr=8-7&keywords=xeon+e5

this would favore your editing and workstation functionality with 4 more cores and 8 more threads but could hinder some cpu bound games because of its lower clock speed

Holy Unicorn farts and lepricorn hairs that's one pricey cpu, most likely overkill lmao, however I suppose I could just not buy my parts for an extra month if I really did feel I needed it haha, thanks anyways
