Where should i start learning linux?

Can anyone give your opinions on which or how should i start with Linux?

There is not requirement like it being simple as i have a relatively good background in coding already, would prefer something that looks great, programs well.

 

Then again I have 0 idea what is going on in Linux and only know that mint(?) exists. Would love if anyone can provide suggestions on which to start and also state reasons why!

I suggest you to go through a tutorial on youtube. I'm pretty sure there are a lot episodes from different channels. 

Once you know the basics, go and google the commands.

That is something that i already plan to do, the only thing now is to decide on which to start with.

I'm sure there will be a lot of episodes. Find a person you enjoy listening to.

Hey :) Well, my personal favourite is Mint, the one you already know, but you have many distros with different interfaces... For example ElementaryOS takes a MacOS approach to linux, Ubuntu has its own unique UI, and then you have many others like debian, arch linux which each have key differences...

 

For ease of use, id recommend you to stick to an Ubuntu-based distribution, such as Mint, as this are the most user-friendly ones and in my personal experience, ive not had trouble finding help or guides to whatever ive wanted to do.

The best distros to start on imo are Ubuntu and Arch/Manjaro. Ubuntu is well documented because of the sheer number of people who use it, so you can probably just google your problem and find an answer. Arch is also very well documented on it's wiki, but it is pretty challenging to get running (I gave up on it), so Manjaro (what I use) is what I'd recommend. I've only been using Linux for about two weeks (Ubuntu for half a week, tried and gave up on Arch, Manjaro the rest of the way), and I already have a pretty good idea of what I'm doing.

 

If you just want to learn about it first before you jump into it,YouTube, forums, and distro Wiki's are your friend.

@Xaring, i tried accessing the website both in incognito and normal browser and i don't seem to be able to access it at this very moment.                                                             As for Elementary OS, it looks like something i would like to work on, but it seems to be a paid OS. I would get to know Linux first before heading for this option in particular.

 

Arch Linux looks to be very light, ill go investigate whether the OS is pleasing enough for me to work with, command line workflow and ugly GUI is going to murder me over a period of time so i would pass if it ends up to be such a thing.

After careful considerations, i have decided to go with Mint, due to it's pleasingly good GUI, and a general friendliness on top of it.

Arch Linux looks to be okay, very basic, not that it is a bad thing but not what i am exactly looking for.

Ubunto and Manjaro was a nono for me as i find Mint to be superior in both aspects, looks and friendliness.

 

Lastly about Elementary OS, i wan't to try it out. But now it is probably better to associate myself with a simpler form of OS before i touch on it.

Elementary OS is free, just input 0 as a custom number and it will let you through. They do this to encourage people to purchase the software which helps pay for their developers. Seeing as you chose Mint though this is just for future consideration.

My advise is to just install a simple distro first like ubuntu or mint (maybe dualboot) then watch some youtube videos on basic tasks, but there is no better learning then by experience so my advise is just use it a lot and if you dont know something search on the web or ask on fora

If you are just starting I would go with Ubuntu then arch and so on. If you like cyber security there is always Kali!

If it's your first time installing Linux, for the love of god, don't install Arch. Even after 6 years of experience with Linux, my first time with Arch was an absolute nightmare. It took me an entire 24 hours just to get the EFI partition to get recognized by the BIOS (still have no idea why that happened).

 

That said, I think the best way to start is to just do it. Install Ubuntu or Fedora on an old system and just start using it. You'll learn much more from hands-on experience than you ever will from reading guides online.

People telling you to start with Arch are trolls. You won't be getting past disk partitioning if you decide to install Arch before trying out other Linux distros. You'll say "fuck this" and go.

My recommendations to start with would be 1- Mint 2- Debian 3- Ubuntu, if you prefer Arch branch over the Debian branch for some reason (package manager maybe?) it would probably be wise to start with Manjaro.

And as to how to start learning...well...best way is to install and just start using. When you encounter issues/don't know how to do something, you just google it. This way you will learn pretty quick.

You aren't computer newbie, so I really think that is best way for you.

 

I personally started this way - Deleted windows, installed Linux, and just started using it(it was Mint). Never returned to windows(aside from "must know how to fix this" needed for my job)
