Posted March 3, 2016 Rome - while not the game that started it all, Rome catapulted the series into greatness. It's a really old game and suffers from "early 3D game" syndrome. It's good on sale but its pretty crappy without mods TBH. Not good at the authenticity aspect either. Rome can rush legionary cohorts by 200 BC, Egyptians use chariots, and WARPIGS. BUY IT FOR THE WARPIGS. Medieval II - Probably the best game on the list. However, littered with numerous problems. Lots of crashing if you install mods on a Windows 7+ machine, the UI is ghastly, shit takes up way too much space and its obvious it was not designed for 16:9. Lots of pros though, it's still the most well mod-supported games in the series due to relative ease of which game files could be changed and scripts could be written. Also not a very Grand Campaign game without a big mod like Stainless Steel. But battles are weighty, cavalry charges are devastating, and elite infantry wreck house. BUY IT. Empire - a shit game with a surprising amount of mod support. It runs alright now b/c of overpowered hardware, and the UI is decent. But battles are clunky, the politics system is really flawed, the map is spread too thin lacking detail in Western Europe of all places in favor of the huge Americas and India map, despite many of the countries in the game having 0 imperial interests in America or India. Overall a really bad game that fell on it's face in terms of scope. Graphics are sometimes decent and other time downright horrific, sound design is awful, guns sound like puffballs and the music is just uninspiring. Napoleon - it's a better Empire that is only set in Europe. It's okay, it inherits many of the same systems and has the same goddamn boring music and sound design as well. Shogun 2 - the game to buy on the list. Relatively bug free but has pretty glaring gameplay issues that come out of it's simplicity. Sieges are boring, and without mods the physics sort of suck. Campaign is by far the best of all TW games. It really fleshes out the city + resource combo introduced in Empire. Now cities have many upgrade paths for their buildings (usually in the lieu of utility vs economy), as well as the resources (ex. 4 different upgrades to a basic temple). Great campaign + okay battles makes it the must-buy of the series excluding Rome/Medieval II, because those you have to buy. Fall of the Samurai is an incredible expansion. Throw Rome 2 and Atilla into the trash.
