Hey there ajh657,

It is recommended to use the tool provided by the manufacturer as it knwos the firmware of the drive best and can give you legit results. If you  are going for a RMA procedure you would usually be required to test the drive with the manufacturer's tool first and then send the drive. It's always a good idea to doublecheck the results with a third-party tool but testing it with a manufacturer's tool is recommended. 

What's the brand and model of the drive that you are concerned for? Are there any signs of problems?
